Formed in 2018 by Fangui (singer & guitarist), Tote (guitarist & vocals), Fon (bassist) and Meri (drums), WEAK is a punk-rock band based in Madrid (SP). You can tell they grew up with NOFX, Lagwagon and No Use for A Name tapes blaring on their Walkmans as their sound could be defined as a passionate homage to the Californaian punk rock bands of the nineties. Their first studio album “The Wheel”, co-released in 2019 by several national and international labels (La Agonía de Vivir, Morning Wood, Bcore, Waterslide...), has led them to tour extensively through Spain and Europe that same year. Later that year, Tote (guitarist & vocals) leaves the band and Diego Martínez (guitarist & vocals) replaces him, closing the line up again shortly after. In 2022 the band recorded their second studio album, “A Guide for Adult Despair”, fully recorded, mixed and mastered at Ultramarinos Costabrava by Santi García and Victor García. The album was released in summer 2022. The band has already been confirmed on acknowledged European festivals such as Tsunami Xixon and is planning their second European tour.

Fleshwater "We're Not Here To Be Loved"

LP - $17.25 / CD - $7.00
LP UPC: 196925325356
CD UPC: 197187122400
STREET DATE: 11/4/22
CAT#: CCA107
LABEL: Closed Casket Activities

Fleshwater paint in broad strokes of alternative, shoegaze, electronic, post-hardcore, and off-kilter pop splashed against a tight sonic canvas awash in vibrant colors and visceral textures. Their songs unfurl with all the unpredictability of a living entity (and you can never quite put a finger on where they’ll go next). The moment you press play, it’s as if they appear in a rush of emotion, only to disappear back into a ghostly ether once the record stops.

As such, the Lowell, MA quartet—Anthony DiDio [vocals, guitar], Marisa Shirar [vocals], Matt Wood [drums], and Jeremy Martin [bass]—balance the intimate inhale of male-female harmonies with an overpowering exhale of distortion.

Now, they materialize in 2022 with nine songs on their full-length debut, We’re Not Here To Be Loved [Closed Casket Activities].

“It’s ambiguous,” notes Anthony. “It’s like the music is attached to the mood rather than lumped into a genre. There are so many different elements. Fleshwater is never one thing.” The band quietly emerged in 2020 with Demo. “Linda Claire” amassed 1.3 million Spotify streams under the radar, while Stereogum hailed the three-song set as “a cool piece of hazy guitar-trudge music.” Along the way, the musicians wrote what would become We’re Not Here To Be Loved and self-produced the album with Kurt Ballou [Converge] recording them. The band mined a kaleidoscope of influences, ranging from Hum, Deftones, Sunny Day Real Estate, and Far to Björk, and they ultimately arrived at an ethereal signature style of their own punctuated by gnashing grooves and anesthetizingly gorgeous vocal conjurations.

Barely cracking the one-minute mark, the single “Kiss The Ladder” pulsates with glowing guitar and Marisa’s hypnotic chant, “Now I don’t want to be anyone.” “Backstairs Breathing” begins with creaky clean guitar and melodic verses from Anthony. It gives way to an urgent refrain as both voices entwine, “Become a memory next to me.” A snappy distorted rumble underlines the insidiously catchy “The Razor’s Apple” catalyzed by Marisa’s gauzy, yet guttural delivery. It spirals past a head-nodding drum breakdown on the back of knife-point precise riffing. “It’s my favorite vocal performance by Marisa,” he adds. “We’re definitely excited to play it live." Crossing the five-minute mark, “Foreign” leans into a punchy riff as Marisa and Anthony lock into one last cathartic call-and-response on the chorus.”

In the end, Fleshwater are unlike anything you’ve ever heard—and it’s why the experience of listening to them will belong to you alone. “I want people to have their own experience with Fleshwater’s music and let it take them for a ride,” Anthony leaves off.

CAT#: CCA109
LABEL: Closed Casket Activities

Vinyl comes packaged in a deluxe tip-on style LP jacket with a gatefold insert and digital download.

Produced, Engineered & Mixed by Taylor Young at The Pit Recording Studio. Mastered by Brad Boatright at Audiosiege. Photography by Kylla Barsell, Artwork by Thomas Toye and Layout by Martin Stewart.

Death waits in the wings for all of us. Ironically, it might be the only certainty in life. Nevertheless, we live anyway, squeezing meaning out of each day. Deadbody face this existential truth head-on with a barrage of death metal, grind, and hardcore as unrelenting as it is undeniable. The San Fernando Valley quartet—brothers Taylor Young [vocals, guitar] and Colin Young [vocals, Bass], Miles McIntosh [guitar], and Jorge Herrera [drums]—storm out of the gate with an intense vision befitting of our encroaching collective demise on their 2022 debut album, The Requiem [Closed Casket Activities].

“The idea of the album is the death and mourning of not only an era, but the ego,” notes Taylor. “Regardless of your output, status, goals, failures, or otherwise, the last thing you do is rot or burn. You can’t take any of it with you, so there’s no point in getting hung up on petty details. It sounds bleak, but it’s also meant to be freeing. Let go and move forward.”

The musicians initially breathed life into Deadbody during 2020. The members had made their bones in the underground with Taylor a sought-after producer and member of Twitching Tongues, God’s Hate and Zous as well as former drummer of Nails, Colin in God’s Hate and Twitching Tongues, Miles in Apparition, and Jorge in ACXDC and Despise You. They wrote and jammed over the course of the next two years, recording in Taylor’s studio The Pit in Van Nuys. Creatively, they nodded to the likes of Human Remains, Discordance Axis, Burnt By The Sun, Assuck, Brutal Truth, and Suffocation.

Anxious Arms / Dull Mourning "Split"

CASSETTE - $7.00
STREET DATE: 10/21/22
CAT#: SDR085
LABEL: Sunday Drive

Joining from opposite sides of the USA, California’s Anxious Arms and North Carolina’s Dull Mourning join together for a split EP on Sunday Drive Records. Anxious Arms’ “Wasted Days, Wasted Years” was recorded during the session for 2021’s single, “Faust”. While the previous single was much more straightforward fast and hard, “Wasted Days, Wasted Years” has some more breathing room with a mix of aggressiveness and melody—recalling some of their sounds heard on “Head Toward Heaven” and “Feeler”. On the flip side, Dull Mourning’s “Rejoice” is their hardest single to date. The track leans heavily on the post-hardcore sound established on Ugly Flame with more driving aggression. Both bands deliver some of their best songs to date and contrast perfectly on this split EP.

TRACK LISTING:

  2. Rejoice (Dull Mourning)

The Arrival Note "Vol. 2"

CASSETTE - $7.00
STREET DATE: 10/21/22
CAT#: SDR086
LABEL: Sunday Drive

As described in the title, “Vol. 2” is a continuation of The Arrival Note’s self-titled demo released in 2021. Shortly after the original EP was released, Joshua Howell and Kyle Weidner continued to write while playing some of the bands’ first shows. In mid-2022, The Arrival Note went back with studio producer, Ethan Murphy in Dade City, FL.

While “Vol. 2” pairs well with the demo, there is a clear distinction of where The Arrival Note is at today. The sound is much more dynamic—still inspired by ’90s emo, but also leaning more toward some of the anthemic sounds heard on early ’00s records like Elliott’s “False Cathedrals” or Sunny Day Real Estate’s “The Rising Tide”. There are quiet moments with acoustic guitars, followed by loud, distorted guitars and shouting from Joshua Howell—who drives more towards lyrics of love and hope. 2022 sees The Arrival Note at an inspiring growth, and now with a solid lineup moving forward, there is much excitement for what the band does next.

Deakfids + Petbrick "Deafbrick"

LP - $13.35
LP UPC: 767870661112
STREET DATE: 10/21/22
CAT#: NR115
LABEL: Neurot

As one traverses through new and intimidating terrain unfamiliar a short while ago, two collaborators have come together to unwittingly create a record curiously suited to an intimidating and unpredictable new era. Deafbrick, the collaboration between Säo Paulo’s sonic warriors Deafkids and London’s pulverising duo Petbrick is a vertiable force against adversity, and less a polite meeting of minds than a fiery collision whose impact and incandescence extend beyond the horizon.

The results run the gamut through a litany of uniformly invigorating audial landscaps—this is an arena where Deafkids’ appetite for lysergic punk-damaged tumult and Petbrick’s ventures into dystopian synth-driven soundscapes can happily engage in gladiatorial contest. From the unearthly percussive clangour of “Hyperkinetic Mass Disordert” to the DHR-addled chaos of the paint-stripping “Mega Ritual”, every second of Deafbrick is infused with malevolent charisma and iconoclastic élan.

Yet perhaps the ultimate destructive moment of this particular demolition derby comes via a thrillingly monomaniacal take on Discharge’s ‘Free Speech For The Dumb. Not that it necessarily met the approval of Discharge themselves, who make a cameo appearance on the song’s outro. “I asked them to record some quotes saying how much they hated our version” laughs Iggor. “One of them even said that Metallica did a better job. That really freaked me out!” Metallica, it’s fair to say objectively, do not do a better job.

Petbrick "Liminal"

LP - $16.60
LP UPC: 733102724238
STREET DATE: 10/14/22
CAT#: NR121
LABEL: Neurot

In a world hurtling towards new frontiers of horror on a daily basis, there’s precious little time for pause. For the self-respecting artist, the only reasonable solution is psychic warfare. Such is the terrain of Petbrick on the titanic and transformative Liminal.

Here on their second album the duo of Wayne Adams (BigLad/Johnny Broke)and Iggor Cavalera (Sepultura/CavaleraConspiracy/Soulwax) lays waste to all or any constrictions in its path, Blending a vast sonic landscape with a relentless compunction to break the pain barrier, Liminal is a dizzying exercise in overdrive which can take in industrial abrasions, pulverising rhythmic drive, acid-damaged freakery, cinematic tension and balladic gravitas in disarmingly coherent fashion.
Other heads and personalities also came on board to add richness and intrigue to the onslaught -“I believe we got an amazing team of collaborators - from old school friends like Neurosis’ Steve Von Till and Converge’s Jacob Bannon to new school artists like Paula Rebbeledo from Raktaand New York doom rappers Lord Goat and Truck Jewelz” notes Iggor.

This is an album birthed in difficult times and expressly engaged with raging against the dying of the light. As Iggor puts it “Liminal is an insane mirror of what being isolated feels like -madness through noise experimentations” An alchemical vision fit to both elevate the spirit and destroy everything in its path,‘Liminal’ is the sound of Petbrick blasting their way through the boundaries of a fresh hell.

Microwaves "Discomfiture Atlas"

LP - $17.25
STREET DATE: 10/14/22
CAT#: 31G127
LABEL: Three One G

Of innumerable bands that traffic in dissonance, the musick of Pittsburgh, PA’s Microwaves shears clean and hot as an oxy-lance through the defenses of even the most cynical noise rock aficionado. In this iteration of the band, which has been in existence now for 20 years, core members John Roman (drums, vocals) and David Kuzy (guitar, vocals) round themselves out with 2006 alum bassist/vocalist Adam MacGregor on one side (“Pyroclast”), and founding bassist/vocalist Steve Moore (Film composer and member of Zombi, Lovelock, Miracle, and more) on the other (“Plasma”). Over the years, Microwaves continues to pick up the loose ends left by Voivod, MX-80, Snakefinger, and some of their own Pittsburgh-area “math-rock” contemporaries, twisting them into a Gordian knot that at once rages and confounds.

Microwaves’ newest LP, Discomfiture Atlas, is being released by Three One G Records on October 14th. This album features guest appearances by Eric Paul (Arab on Radar, Doomsday Student, Psychic Graveyard), Sarah Quintero (Spotlights), Rebecca Burchette (Exosus), and Todd Rittman (Dead Rider).

Who among us doesn’t long for a “do-over” of our wreck of recent history? Maybe it’s that attitude that accounts for the ascendancy of multiverses, parallel dimensions, the “Berenstain/Berenstein” debate, etc., in public imagination. Whatever the reason, contemplating other planes of existence is no longer exclusive to the hard sci-fi wonk set. Apropos of all the above, Microwaves manifests their own twin realities over the two sides of Discomfiture Atlas, its second album on San Diego’s vaunted Three One G records. Though distinct, both sides of the album, “Pyrocast” and “Plasma,” salt the band’s terse alloy of thrash metal, no-wave, brutal prog, noise-rock, and math rock with a hint of pop brevity, if not the melody to match.

Even at a curmudgeonly 20 years of age, (both versions of) Microwaves lean into the new material with the desperate enthusiasm of a 50-something peeling out in a midlife-crisis Corvette. Roman delivers his usual cyborg clatter, careening through odd meters and deconstructing rock drumming according to plans laid out by Beefheart and Devo. MacGregor complements with tortuous lines that invoke eastern melodic ideas at times, though they seethe with distortion and gurgle queasily through analog filtering. His vocal palette has widened to include an unhinged/unschooled falsetto and a Teutonic metal shriek, used to great effect on “Hammerspace” alongside Kuzy’s wavering, town-crier bark. Kuzy executes his trademark spindly atonalities with a draftsman’s precision, alternately ratcheting through all of the first-wave thrash-metal riffs he probably ever wanted to hear. Moore’s performances on side “Plasma” present a tighter and more reeled-in quality, focused on timbre and monolithic repetition over the flash of the past. In an all-time first for Microwaves, the standout “Your Dumb Guts” finds Moore serving up a vocal melody with stunning earworm potential.

Intensive Care "That We Be Made Worthy"

LP - $17.25
LP UPC: 196626418586
STREET DATE: 10/7/22
CAT#: CCA102
LABEL: Closed Casket Activities

Trauma surrounds us. Underneath the scars in its wake, it leaves truth. Intensive Care excavate harsh honesty from life’s moments of wreckage. Bottling raw intensity, screams tremble through a warped industrial cacophony as they engage a sonic sensory overload. The Toronto duo—Andrew Nolan [vocals, bass] and Ryan Bloomer [drums, percussion]—grab trauma by the throat and translate it into nine gutturally gnashing anthems on their Closed Casket Activities debut, That We Be Made Worthy.

“We’re really influenced by early electronic and experimental music, but we grew up in hardcore and Metal bands,” notes Andrew. “It’s grounded in heavy music, but it’s really exploratory. We’re using drums, bass, and the tools at our disposal to create something of our own.”

The friendship between Andrew and Ryan dates back to the late nineties when they met via the international tape trading scene. With Andrew in the UK and Ryan in Toronto, music bridged the distance and forged their friendship. They made waves together in The Endless Blockade before introducing Intensive Care during 2016 with the Pay Pig EP. They delivered projects at a prolific pace, including Voyeurism EP [2017] and A Removal To Elsewhere EP [2018] in addition to various singles and a split with Full of Hell. Throughout 2020 and 2021, they wrote and recorded That We Be Made Worthy out of home studios in Toronto. This time around, piano and electronics offset moments of harsh catharsis, adding another dimension.

“We really brought the electronic influence to the forefront,” he affirms. “We pushed it and made this side more musical.” A feverish siren squeal bleeds into “Behind Every Closed Door” as a trudging groove bolsters the frontman’s pummeling delivery. Surveying his time employed at a harm reduction for homeless adults in the throes of the opioid crisis, the chant hits hard, “Behind every closed door, a corpse not yet discovered, behind every closed door a memory waits to live again.”

“Six months after I left the job, I realized I had this underlying trauma,” he admits. “Every single time I opened a door, I would get flashes of a corpse on the other side, because that’s what I was constantly finding.”

Thematically, he drew inspiration from the Catholic Saint of Amputation—Saint Antony of Padua. As such, imagery of amputation doubled as a metaphor for imbalances of power, race relations, and labor rights throughout That We Be Made Worthy. The snarling and biting “Taxonomy of Rats” dissects “the history of disadvantaged people in society referred to as vermin.” Then, there’s “Incisors,” which layers the “fight for respect and recognition in the workplace” over a chaotic din. The seven-minute finale “At The Foot Of The Mountain” tempers a primitive groove with the expanse of UK doom as it reinterprets the myth of Sisyphus as told by Albert Camus.

“It’s a strange ending to the album,” Andrew elaborates. “It’s supposed to be equal parts victorious and defeating. The refrain in the song is ‘No victory is final’. We keep saying that because you think you won, but you have to keep doing these things and pushing the boulder up the hill.”

In the end, Intensive Care climb out of the trauma and towards an artistic triumph of their own. “We’re always looking ahead,” Andrew leaves off. “We keep our eyes on what we’re doing.”

Pilot To Gunner / Her Head's On Fire "Split"

7"EP - $6.50
STREET DATE: 9/30/22
CAT#: MOM073
LABEL: Mind Over Matter

Fresh off of the release of their respective new full length albums, we have a split release between two NYC artists: indie punk stalwarts Pilot To Gunner (who are returning for their first new bits of music since 2012) and newcomers Her Head's On Fire who just released their debut LP via Iodine Recordings. Though the moniker of Her Head's On Fire might be new, the sheer amount of punk rock tenure present within the band is only compounded when the likes of Pilot To Gunner are thrown into the mix. With members that have cut their teeth in bands such as Garrison, Saves The Day, the Bomb and Small Brown Bike, you might think that you're going to get an explosive hit of punk mixed with indie rock and just a dab of post-hardcore mixed in for flair..and you'd be correct.

Intended to be a fun project between old friends, this split marks a perfect little exclamation point to the songs that have already been released by both bands in the recent months, as they have both artists going out with a "bang" and leaving everyone wanting more. If you're unfamiliar with the works available prior to this split, it will serve as an excellent launching point for anyone who is just discovering either artist, as both songs run parallel to the full lengths that precede them.

TRACK LISTING:

  1. Pilot To Gunner - "Gone For Real"
  2. Her Head's On Fire - "Just The Way You Are"

Hot Water Music, The Get Up Kids, Samiam

Dystopian reality. Division and banality. We are what we tend to be, but are we what we intend to be?

In the eighties and early nineties, young punks gathered in Oakland, California’s abandoned urban spaces, shared punk houses, and small clubs to create community and raise their voices against the injustice and brutality that surrounded them. Complex images drawn on fliers were passed from hand to hand and posted on walls. Songs screamed out behind closed doors were captured on cassettes. The underground was a world of its own, a tightly knit cohort united by the need to transform rage into art, an emotional alchemy that was both earnest and reckless. A visual and sonic language emerged, and thirty years on, it still has the power to speak the truth.

Rungs on a ladder or Bars on a cage?
The only thing I feel that's real is rage.

The members of Tension Span spoke this language in their early bands: Noah in Christ On Parade and Neurosis, Geoff in Asunder and Mauz in Dystopia. These friends of several decades have created something new from the cloth that was woven in their youth. In a moment of complete isolation, separated by the global pandemic, Mauz and Geoff sent rough mixes of new songs to Noah and his mind began to reel with questions, transformed into lyrics.

Cracked Society, cracks your mind.
Am I invisible? Or are you Blind?

Living in a society of constant negative conditions, how do we navigate this journey? How do we walk through this world and hold on to our idealistic intentions, kindness, and empathy through constant states of stress and fear? How is our mental health and spiritual health impacted by angst, anger, anxiety, depression, and trauma. What is it all for, how is any of this meaningful?

Each of us a filament, each of a flame.
Each of us indifferent, each of us the same.

Drawing influence and inspiration from the dark punk and post punk of the late '70's and early 80's, the sensibility and DIY approach of the UK anarcho-punk movement and the energy and immediacy of the early-mid 90's Bay Area punk scene, Tension Span has created music reflecting the bleak reality of this time of socio-political collapse, increasing economic precarity, creeping authoritarianism, and viral biological and psychological pathogens that are decimating the lives of millions.

Ultimately, making meaning out of struggle is a profound act of hope. It is with this spirit and inspiration that Tension Span offers you a collection of twelve songs rooted in the past, caught in the present storm, and yearning toward a new day. The past is a story we experienced together, and the future remains unwritten.

Regulate "Regulate"

LP UPC: 603111758015
CD UPC: 603111758022
STREET DATE: 9/30/22

LABEL: Flatspot

Breaking onto the hardcore scene in 2013, New York’s Regulate have shown a resilient and earnest approach in everything they do. This rings true on the band’s upcoming self-titled LP that will drop September 30th on their new label home, Flatspot Records. The ten tracks on the album developed organically throughout the brunt of the pandemic, inspiring vocalist Sebastian Paba’s most personal lyrics to the date. Regulate has always been an outlet for vulnerability - the band’s latest album In the Promise of Another Tomorrow (2018) shined with commentary on identity and power structure complimented by explosive musicianship. Regulate takes the band to another level, teetering between a traditional hardcore sound and something more striking, pulling additional inspiration from Latin music and R&B. Paba effortlessly handles both screams and what might be the catchiest clean vocal delivery in the entire genre while pushing forth thoughts on serious topics like genocide against indigenous peoples and more light-hearted notes of just loving making music.

Having already shared the stage with a heavy list of bands like Terror, Backtrack, Glassjaw, Madball, and Burn, the band is prepped to get back to touring steadily in 2022. They’ll hit the road with Vein.fm and Candy this summer and are also slated for numerous festival appearances.

Heading into a new album cycle, ambitions are high for Regulate, but they don’t mind leaving a few things up to interpretation.
