Indifferent Engine "Speculative Fiction"

LP - $19.40 / CD - $9.60
STREET DATE: 5/30/25
CAT#: CRR241
LABEL: Church Road

Indifferent Engine is a post-hardcore punk band from Cambridge, UK, known for their genre-defying sound and visceral live performances. Drawing inspiration from early hardcore, art punk, post-rock, ambient music, pulp science fiction and obsolete electronics, the band creates a soundscape that is as eclectic as it is intense.

Originally conceived as a solo project by frontman Adam Paul, Indifferent Engine evolved into a full band in 2019, bringing their unique blend of chaotic energy and experimental sound to stages across the UK. Their performances are a sensory experience, often featuring the largest rig of vintage CRT TVs in the UK live scene, bathing the stage in the soft, eerie glow of static. This visual backdrop, combined with Adam’s commanding stage presence — fluctuating between Mark E. Smith-esque monologues and raw, visceral screams — creates an emotional atmosphere that is equal parts unsettling and captivating.

Musically, Indifferent Engine weaves together haunting ambient synths and samples with the frenetic fervor of post-hardcore, crafting a dynamic presence that feels more like performance art than a traditional rock show. Their sound is a reflection of their diverse influences, merging nervous DIY hardcore with introspective post-metal elements to produce something wholly unique.

After their first EP, "Canis" (2021) - a raw statement of intent recorded in a derelict farmhouse between the lockdowns of 2020 - comes their first full length album "Speculative Fiction".

Saetia "Tendrils"

LP - $15.30
STREET DATE: 4/25/25
CAT#: NHH01

Saetia was formed in 1997 in New York City and only existed until 1999. During two decades of inactivity, the band's music took on a life of its own, cultivating a large international fanbase and is broadly acknowledged as massively influential in the DIY emo hardcore universe.

In 2016, the band released a double album discography titled ‘Collected’ via Secret Voice records. This project reignited the band's interest in playing music, and 6 years later, in November of 2022, the band played 5 sold out shows in NYC and Philadelphia. The response was overwhelming, and the shows raised money for local charities defending trans rights and protecting abortion access. Over the following two years, the band continued to play shows throughout the U.S., Canada, England and have raised over $67K for various organizations and charities.

In 2025 the band will release the EP, Tendrils. This will be the first new music they've created since 1999. They will also travel to South America and Europe.

When you hear music like this—the wild, loose and woozy drags of guitar; the impossible beauty of it all—what kind of landscape presents itself in your mind? Vistas big enough to be forgotten in. Deserts which stretch back to the beginning of time. Infinite horizons melting into pink bokehs. It’s Texas, isn’t it?

Formed in 2017 in Texas’ Rio Grande Valley, Glare aren’t so much genre traditionalists as they are painters of wide realms and intense moods. The four-piece band has already accumulated a large audience, both in the flesh with their reputation for sell-out shows, and on the internet, a place where people go to short-circuit feelings through their screens.

Sunset Funeral, the band’s debut LP, is a fog of dreamy grief, where feeling supersedes language. It’s music, as guitarist Toni Ordaz puts it, “for people who don’t know how to talk about how they feel.” An album that’s been years in the making, Sunset Funeral is a document of unspeakable grief, charting the process of mourning and how it travels through our subconscious and dreams.

One of the great charms of Sunset Funeral, and of Glare overall, is how they approach such a large, celestial sound with humble materials. Among the shoegaze revivalists, Glare come to the canvas with a more resourceful, DIY perspective than many of their peers. Glare’s music is too sublime, too huge to sound like it came from any kind of manmade instrument, tiny amp box or otherwise.

On first listen, Sunset Funeral—which scans as vast as desert sand—may overwhelm the senses. But look closer, and you’ll find a multiplicity of heavily crushed textures, treasures. ‘Guts’, with its sweetly chugging guitar line, dissolves the borders between bliss and despair. ‘2 Soon 2 Tell’, one of the album’s most gauzily romantic tracks, is both tense and transcendent. Nü Burn, a crunchy and lilting number, harkens back to the band’s grittier hardcore roots. But even when they deign to go hard, you can hear a softening in Glare’s sound compared to any of their previous releases, as well as an attempt to lean into more traditional pop song structures. The music drifts heavenward, to be sure, though it’s still tethered down by steady foundations. It’s beautiful. It’s humid. It’s delirious. It’s music made by people whose feelings speak louder than their words.

01. Mourning Haze
02. Kiss the Sun
03. Saudade

Formed in late 2019, FORLORN blend expressionist art, crushing soundscapes and paganism to carve out their own brand of 'Folk Horror'. Fastbreak "Fast Cars, Fast Women"

LP - $17.25
LP UPC: 724399772569
STREET DATE: 03/28/25
CAT#: IOD-66
LABEL: Iodine Recordings

In the late 90s, no one carried the torch for Youth Crew hardcore like Fastbreak. Formed in 1994, the Connecticut band quickly made a name for themselves in the New England area, thanks to their explosive approach to fast-paced hardcore music and unrelenting positivity. Their sound was a true successor to the upbeat style of bands like Gorilla Biscuits and Youth of Today. Their energy made them a staple in Connecticut hardcore, as they became a fixture playing alongside bands like H2O, Bane, Ten Yard Fight, Right Brigade, and more.

Despite their significant impact on the hardcore scene, Fastbreak's recordings had long been out of print and unavailable on streaming services. This is why Iodine Records is proud to re-release Fastbreak’s seminal debut album, Fast Cars, Fast Women. Originally released in 1998, every idea, riff, and rhythm on the record feels as fresh as ever. Songs like “Said and Done” and “Places Trades” are bursting with pure exuberance and energy. In a time when bands were getting darker and gloomier, Fastbreak was a breath of fresh air, bringing a more inviting energy to the genre. Fastbreak’s ideas were extremely ahead of their time, predicting the future fusion of hardcore and pop-punk that would go on to take over the world. Their influence can be heard in countless bands that followed, blending the raw energy of hardcore with the immediacy of a positive attitude and approach. It’s a painfully underrated record, but thankfully, listeners now have a chance to realize just what was going on.

Fastbreak’s Fast Cars, Fast Women features Patrick Rorick on vocals, Steven Pica and Neal St. Clair on guitar, Don Raymond on bass, and Luke Garro on drums. The album was produced by Dean Baltulonis and mastered at Metropolis Studios.

Seattle’s Dead Bars, in the words of Razorcake,“make something impossible to duplicate look so simple and attainable.” For over a decade the band, founded and led by John Maiello, have been belting out life-affirming hard rock with the same gift for thecraft as acts like Japandroids, White Reaper, and Fucked Up. Mind Over Matter Records

Our World Is Going To Disappear is the debut EP from the Brooklyn, NY trio Memory Entry. The band began in early 2020 when the three original members got together for an impromptu jam session. They carved out the beginning of what would become the song “Crawler” and parted ways, not realizing they wouldn’t step foot into the practice space again for another 19 months due to the world wide pandemic.

“We slowly began piecing together songs, pulling from our collective screamo, emo, and hardcore roots” said vocalist and guitarist Keith M. “It was a very slow process, as we were all busy with other bands and creative endeavors. We couldn’t decide on a name or a direction and that only slowed things down further.” Fast forward to summer of 2023: “I kept having these recurring dreams every night. They seemed so real. The same places; the same people; some familiar and some new. I was thinking a lot about the past, mistakes I had made and opportunities I had squandered. I wondered if all of my best days were behind me. Concurrently with the dreams, I was inspired by several pieces of art I was taking in at the time that coincided with what I had been experiencing at night and this opened up the idea of the dream world. It felt like there was work to be done - but it couldn’t all be done in our physical world. There was more to discover in this other world.”

It was then that Memory Entry settled on a name and the EP came together quickly after. The story of “Our World Is Going To Disappear” is the story of the band. Starting out simply and lamenting everyday heartbreak, but then slowly awakening, expanding our sonic palette, experimenting with different sounds and vocalizations, finding our identity, getting to know each other and realizing that there’s much more out there to discover, in this world, or another world. The final result is a sonic journey into parts unknown - combining elements of hardcore, noisecore, post hardcore and classic screamo. Aggressive but not without moments of melody and beauty, Memory Entry are set to take their place in the world of aggressive music with the release of “Our World Is Going To Disappear.”

Guiltless "Teeth to Sky

LP - $15.95 / CD - $9.60
LP UPC: 657628450313
CD UPC: 657628450320
STREET DATE: 3/7/25
CAT#: NR133
LABEL: Neurot

“We all grew up playing heavy music. For me personally, listening to Neurosis and Kiss It Goodbye in my 20s was almost a cathartic experience. Identifying with people who have a similar world perspective but are being creative with it—that was important.”

Josh Graham isn’t just talking about his decades-long career in heavy music, which has included A Storm of Light, Battle of Mice, and many years as the one-man visual department for Neurosis. He’s also talking about the formation of Guiltless, his new band with bassist Sacha Dunable (Intronaut), drummer Billy Graves (Generation of Vipers) and guitarist Dan Hawkins (A Storm of Light).

Guiltless released their debut EP, Thorns, via Neurot Recordings in early 2024. Crushing and cheerless, it seemed to welcome the apocalypse looming on our collective horizon. “The EP had a pretty narrow focus starting from my ideas,” Graham explains. “I wrote the basic outlines for the songs and then reached out to the guys to see if they’d actually want to play on it. With this record, my main goal was to really collaborate with Sacha and Dan and Billy because those guys are great songwriters. The new album is meant to open up the sonic palette and explore more territory.”

That new album is Teeth to Sky, the band’s first full-length. Even more pulverizing and focused than its predecessor, the album’s collaborative songwriting approach was paired with an adjustment to the lyrical content. “On the EP, the lyrics are as bleak as possible,” Graham points out. “I wanted to try to turn that around a little bit for Teeth to Sky. It’s a more introspective record. It’s expressing the idea of taking advantage of your life while you have it. It’s still dark in nature, but I think somewhat less doom-and-gloom.”

You can hear it on “One Is Two,” which channels a tightly controlled Meshuggah churn through the more visceral lo-fi approach of Kiss It Goodbye or Swedish noise rock legends Breach. “The song explores the duality of human nature and how it relates to our time on Earth,” Graham says. “We are inherently moral as individuals, but as a species we bulldoze through everything we can get our hands on or drills in. Our species is both good and bad, one and the same.”

On “In Starless Reign,” Guiltless blend dissonant black metal and thundering doom while Graham invokes humanity’s inability to see the forest through the trees. “The rich focus on getting richer as our small planet becomes less habitable from year to year,” he says. “No concern for the wellbeing of others, just, ‘Let's cut more jobs, maximize profit and buy another superyacht.’”

Then there’s the bruising title track, which combines the gnarled sensibilities of The Jesus Lizard, Cherubs and Barn Owl into a rumination on Mother Nature’s revenge. “The title track represents a surrender to nature's unstoppable force,” Graham says. “As climate extremes continue to grow and impact virtually everyone on earth, we are now facing the impact of our forefathers’ actions, and our children will live through a new and unprecedented future.”

Teeth To Sky was recorded remotely by the members of Guiltless—except for the drums, which were recorded by Travis Kammeyer (Generation of Vipers) at Fahrenheit Studios in Johnson City, Tennessee. The album was mixed by Kurt Ballou at God City in Salem, Massachusetts, and mastered by Brad Boatright at Audiosiege in Portland, Oregon.

The album will be released by Neurot Recordings in early 2025.

Hollow Sunshine "Disposer"

LP - $14.65
STREET DATE: February 28, 2025
CAT#: PRO-103
LABEL: Protagonist Music

Hollow Sunshine is a bicoastal duo consisting of multi-instrumentalist and producer Reuben Sawyer with vocalist Morgan Enos. Their first album in seven years, ‘Disposer,’ marks an evolutionary step for them in their long musical partnership. Think Low, Duster, or Codeine — the shoegaze and slowcore side of their creative blend; in some ways, a heavier, more oppressive listen, but with even more melody as a counterbalance, dwelling on themes of distance and dislocation. The combination of Enos’ abstract lyrics and choir-like vocal stacks, with Sawyer’s melody crafting and combustible production, adds up to a welcome return from a band that never really went away.

“‘Disposer’ is super austere to me,” says Sawyer, the mastermind behind Hollow Sunshine for 15 years and counting; Enos joined in 2012. “The songs ‘Immaterial, ‘Jumper,’ and ‘Frequent Flier really have that feeling. They bring me back to a place of reality that is outside of distraction.”

This album is a dusty gem of affecting downer pop that should appeal to anyone who appreciates how the melancholic and melodic can be woven together to create a beautifully somber listening experience. Featuring members of The Column, Human Trophy, Blood Bright Star.

Wren "Black Rain Falls"

LP - $19.40 / CD - $9.60
STREET DATE: 2/21/25
CAT#: CRR233
LABEL: Church Road

For over a decade WREN have meticulously crafted a sound and aesthetic inspired by the complex nature of the lived human condition; being as cathartic as it is bleak. They aspire to connect with each person encountering their music, be it through recorded or live listening. In whatever way it is experienced the music is a visceral offering to its audience to take from it what they will.

The theme inherent throughout ‘Black Rain Falls’ is the shared grief of the band members. During the pandemic they tragically lost a close friend to suicide, and this record has served as some sort of way for them to navigate through the storm of loss. This is how the band in their own words described the album... "The new record is a crystallisation of the conceptual voice-giving to natural collapse, humanity's decline and the shadowed spectre that has imbued WREN since the beginning."

Since their inception WREN have maintained a strict independent ethos, collaborating on album releases with various UK labels (Gizeh Records, Astral Noize). WREN have played hundreds of shows across the UK and Europe with bands including Kowloon Walled City (USA), Inter Arma (USA), Unsane (USA), Fórn (USA), Moloch (UK), Birds In Row (FR) and more, and played at festivals such as Damnation, Arctangent, Desertfest, Incubate (NL) and Raw Power to name a few.

ASKYSOBLACK "Touch Heaven"

LP - $17.90
STREET DATE: 1/31/25
CAT#: NMZ079v
LABEL: New Morality Zine

Philadelphia’s ASKYSOBLACK cements their identity as an anti-shoegaze alternative rock force with their debut LP, Touch Heaven. Following their acclaimed EP, Autumn in the Water, the band takes a more stripped-down approach, trading sonic variation and heaviness for a focus on melody and emotional depth.

Thematically, Touch Heaven delves into the raw and intimate realms of personal loss—specifically love—and the accompanying waves of depression, grief, and heartbreak. Yet, in its musicality, the album offers listeners a chance to detach from the weight of daily life and mental struggles, creating a space for introspection and emotional release.

Lyrically cohesive yet musically expansive, Touch Heaven invites individual interpretation and resonates deeply with those seeking solace in sound. This debut marks a significant evolution for ASKYSOBLACK, setting the stage for their unique voice within the alternative rock scene.

One-sided LP with B-side etching

Coming together in late 2022, Albany, NY based hardcore band Spiritkiller quickly became known locally for their infectious, groove laden riffs and energetic live performances. Weaving together the razor sharp aggression of bands like 108 and Unbroken with flourishes of post hardcore by way of acts like Quicksand and Orange 9mm, Spiritkiller updates this sound in a way that still preserves the passion and impact of that source material.

At the helm, SK guitarist and veteran NJ hardcore/screamo practitioner Tom Schlatter (ex You and I/The Assistant, current Saetia/Hundreds of AU) riffs his way through fresh takes on the sound that dominated hardcore throughout the latter half of the 1990s. The rhythm section of the band is rounded out by bassist Byron Wheeler and drummer Mike Putz who both did time in Albany based crust/dbeat unit Scavengers, which Schlatter had also played drums in after moving to upstate NY several years before. Thick, gritty baselines and agile, inventive drumming hold down the low end and provide the signature punch underpinning the band’s sound. The band’s frontperson Charles Cure (ex Endicott, current HUSH) completes the sound with a vocal style that brings to mind the recalcitrant urgency of Refused and Snapcase inflected with a hint of melody.

A little over a year after their debut, Spiritkiller completed writing and recording their 8 song self-titled LP, which will see the light of day via Protagonist Music and Immigrant Sun records. This release showcases the band’s signature sound with songs that harken back to the heyday of innovation and experimentation in the hardcore sound, while reifying the ethics and message of personal empowerment notable in the subculture of that era. For fans new and old, Spiritkiller is here to bridge the gap between past and present and add their voice to the chorus of others helping to redefine hardcore in the current moment.

"Right around the completion of 'Relapses,' Jimmy (Watson, drums) & Drew (Slavik, guitar) had the idea of doing a collaborative split, which ultimately became an amalgamation of musical chairs and a social experiment. After several months of hurdles preventing anything from really taking off, we finally sorted out the exact details of the project & resolved to collaborate with our colleagues and friends in Meth.

Our guidelines were as follows: Each band would write & record three songs, & then share only the drum tracks with the other band. Each band would then write new music and lyrics over the exchanged tracks. Neither band would hear anything from the other until everything was complete to ensure one couldn't influence the other. In the end, we were astonished at what we had all accomplished. We’re thrilled & proud to present, 'ASYMMETRICS'." - See You Next Tuesday

Downward "The Brass Tax"

LP - $14.00
STREET DATE: 1/31/245 CAT#: NMZ050
LABEL: New Morality Zine

Oklahoma’s DOWNWARD is the perfect example of a band who keeps their head down and drives. Not worried about keeping up with sonic trends or online presence, the band has garnered somewhat of a cult following, proving quality music is what people crave most. Since their inception the band have fine tuned their blend of simultaneously airy and heavy music, and their newest effort, “The Brass Tax”, is no exception. However; the 5 tracks that appear on this EP show a matured band taking more risks sonically in song structure and even leaning into near poplike sensibility. “The Brass Tax” is clearly the product of three musicians spending hours together in a living room working on creating timeless music.

01. Glasshouse
02. Real Green Dollars
03. Ugly Bug
04. Line

"GG Alien and the Mystery Meat" by Justin Pearson

BOOK - $10.70
STREET DATE: 1/31/25
CAT#: 31G146
LABEL: Three One G

GG Alien and the Mystery Meat dives into a slew of intertwining subjects surrounding art, class, and sexuality, to name a few. Here, Justin Pearson steps right up to the line of a social faux pas steeped in current social politics as he reflects on navigating working a minimum wage job at a gay club while maintaining a non-paying job as a "musician" throughout his thirties. Addressing an ever-present overwhelming capitalistic economy as well as his potential cultural appropriation, he lays out (or maybe coughs and spreads out) his absurd and questionable time spent as an employee at San Diego's most popular gay night club.

Praise for GG Alien and the Mystery Meat:

“GG Alien & The Mystery Meat is a gritty, fascinating and beautiful meditation on the intersection of punk and queerness from a counterculture legend. Justin Pearson’s writing voice resonates with just as much power and honesty as his screaming voice.” - Chuck Tingle

Reading GG Alien and the Mystery Meat is the perfect view into Justin Pearson's mind. Tender, crass, sensitive, irreverent, loving and wild all in one. The details are hysterically funny and some of the imagery is so clear I needed to close my eyes but couldn't look away. A must-read for true punks and all of us who love the music underground. - Molly Neuman of Bratmobile

Take this job and shove it... into a book. Being punk past forty means you’re an elder who has likely worked the most insane shit jobs of your life, whether they were fun, awful, paid the bills, paid at all, got your dick sucked, or encouraged you to tell people you could bend in half and suck your own. Those jobs* meant you could continue to make ‘art’ and hopefully pay rent. Reading Justin Pearson's story of fucking up, fucking off, and shockingly not fucking at all during a nearly decade-long run as a gay bar’s odd otter reminded me that we are all freaks on a similar path. I think? Don’t bother buying a bookmark or upsetting uptight zinesters with dog-eared pages. Despite ADHD, exhaustion, and a spaced-out brain, I blasted through this in one sitting. Justin will hold your attention from the first page to the last. - Jenna Pup of HIRS
