Mad Honey "DISCORDIA"

CD - $8.75
STREET DATE: 11/22/24
CAT#: DW263
LABEL: Deathwish Inc. / Sunday Drive

Last September, Oklahoma City rock band Mad Honey released their debut record Satellite Aphrodite. In celebration of its one year anniversary, they’re announcing a full-length reimagined album, DISCORDIA.

More often than not, the reworked songs sound like a broken cassette recording of a dream rock group being run through a washing machine, a mangled mess of distorted guitars, crunchy drums and hyper-pop synths laden with fuzz.

“The goal of this project was to make something so far removed from the original recordings,” says Bramlett. “I was really frustrated with all the shit going on in our world right now. The planet is dying, people keep killing each other, and I just wanted to get all that aggression out with the music and make something as crazy as our world feels. The songs were almost entirely recorded within a week’s time, just raw and live spur of the moment takes to really capture that feeling.”

The result is 11 tracks that span a variety of genres. Everything from the fast paced punk tinged “Headspin” and “fuckurself” to the hyper-pop ballads “red room” “when it all goes wrong” and “psych!!” While songs like “SATAPH” “TLS” and “k (the temple of my body” provide ambient hopeful soundscapes, hook heavy tracks like “EVERYTHING THAT YOU NEED,” “u” and “HEAVY” showcase the catchy pop melodies of Mad Honey.

01. SATAPH

A harrowing document of life, death and transcendence, Do You Still Love Me? is the fifth album from Planes Mistaken for Stars (PMFS), the band’s second outing for Deathwish Inc. and first new music since 2016. It is also the first PMFS release since the death of frontman Gared O’Donnell, whose cancer diagnosis loomed heavily over the recording and whose ghost guided the mix. Chemo and radiation would not stop him from making this masterpiece, in which the band finds itself reeling from the gut-wrenching horrors of their leader’s unimaginable absence.

Written in Peoria amidst the forced isolation of a global pandemic and recorded by Sanford Parker in Chicago, these thirteen songs burn the ears to listen. Album opener “Matthew is Dead” wastes no time with niceties as Planes mourns the 2017 death of founding guitarist Matt Bellinger — Gared’s throat-shredded rasp seethes as if taunting himself: You’re dead, you’re dead, you’re dead— guttural human screams unbottled and broken glass shattered as transcendental meditation and musical catharsis, for band and listener alike. These acute and raw moments are found throughout the record, audible wounds you can hear, see, taste and almost touch. We’ve only got the night, as Gared knew and preached and lived. Just one last drink, shall we begin?

Do You Still Love Me? carries forward Planes’ natural evolution beyond post-hardcore and metal-tinged rock n’ roll, unveiling new layers with each listen. Intertwined vocals and infectious melodies simmer beneath the surface and occasionally boil over, shards of guitar strike like lightning as the rhythm section pounds its marching orders. Whether pummeling mercilessly or tenderly relenting, Do You Still Love Me? shows a band unafraid to lose itself in the musical maelstrom. I don’t have the shakes, the shakes have me — it’s not an easy listen, yet offers immense rewards with time, alchemizing a unique beauty from the pain and tragedy of its creation. It’s an emotional bloodletting for Planes and their extended family around the world, a collective primal scream of coping with life and last breaths, and eternal proof that death is truly not the end.

Chastity "Chastity"

LABEL: Deathwish Inc.

Not Exportable to Candada / UK / Europe

Chastity is for the skids, the headbangers, the freaks. Chastity is for everyone who has suffered and survived the lethal combination of suburban overculture and mental distress. Chastity is especially for everyone who didn't survive--the ones who didn't get out. Brandon Williams did, luckily, and his work with Chastity has been to collect people like him, who got out by the skin of their teeth.

Chastity's first three full-length records--2018's Death Lust, 2019's Home Made Satan, and 2022's Suffer Summer--formed a trilogy that defined a 4-year arc of the band's contribution to outsider music. Each record was informed by Williams' life, but each was also conceptual and interpretive, refracting his experiences through a level of remove. On Chastity's upcoming, self-titled fourth record, there is no such distance: Williams decided to write a fully non-fiction work. Out Friday, September 13 2024 on Deathwish (US), Dine Alone (Canada), and Big Scary Monsters (UK/E) 'Chastity' is a 13-track record about the things that have always run through the band's records--struggle, death, despair, redemption, darkness, and light--but this time, the songs ascend to new depths of intensity and desperation, new heights of resolution and power.

"It's really about the first nosedive that I did as a young person," says Williams. "It's a record about struggle, about the missing years. It's also a thank you to some people in my life."

The record hurtles through melodic hardcore, shoegaze, and emo, all magnificently and enormously rendered thanks to slick work from John Paul Peters (Propagandhi, Comeback Kid), who engineered and mixed the record. The band recorded at Peters' Private Ear Recording in Winnipeg in March 2024. Chastity's guitars have never sounded so immediate and towering, sometimes exploding into a sputtering, ripped-speaker chaos; and there are perhaps the most ferocious bass and drums sounds of the year on Chastity, splitting the difference between gnarly-as-fuck generator-show tones and vividly textured, hi-fi chest-beaters.

The new record arrives on the heels of a whirlwind six years for Chastity. Williams founded the project in Whitby Ontario. From the start, it's been a project of absolution via community connection. There weren't any venues for independent punk music in the suburban town, so Williams and his friends started throwing punk shows in a barn on Whitby's rural outskirts. People took notice: Before long, Ontario punk stalwarts like PUP and Metz were making the pilgrimage to the barn to headline gigs, and profits from the shows went to a regional youth mental health services. Chastity spent the next years touring North America including shows with Sunny Day Real Estate, Alexisonfire, and Deafheaven, culminating in their spring 2024 headline run, with a set that synced to an original feature film projected behind the stage.

This new era begins on opener "Jaw Locked" with a single tom strike and a wall of glorious, pounding major-key guitars. It drives forward, relentless and crackling with energy, while Williams revisits the feeling of voiceless loneliness--with a full, determined belt. He wants to hear people scream it with him. "I think the idea of people singing along with me about a time in my life where I was feeling like my voice didn't count for anything is a relief for me," he says. "It's like the circle has been closed in a way, it's like finally the lonely can all be together."

Follow-up "Electrical Tower Dive" finds Chastity's first official lyric use of "friggin'" tucked into a harrowing retelling of the first time Williams confronted, and re-considered, an early end to his life. Single "Bleached and Buzzed" follows it with a classic skate-punk thrash that seizes with anticipation and anxiety, before spilling into the massive, instant singalong "Summer All Over Again," where Williams laments an inability to fully enjoy even the most brilliant of warm, sunny days: "Summer all over again/And I am still stuck in my own head."

The record closes with "Drawing the Sun Back in the Corner of the Paper," a patient, atmospheric, hopeful slow-burn about opening back up to life and living (as Williams describes it, extending the contract with life) thanks to the care and support of another. In Williams' case, he credits his partner, the musician Linnea Siggelkow, whose care made him want to check in on others who need it, too.

It's a beautiful and affirming ending to a Chastity record, centered on the band's first and enduring idea: Life is less shitty if we live it together.

When State Faults reemerged in 2019 after a five year hiatus (years they spent playing with their indie-punk side project Slow Bloom), they burst back onto the scene with their third full-length LP "Clairvoyant" in hand. The album's subsequent success saw the band touring extensively across North America and Europe in the latter half of the year. With a renewed sense of maturity and focus, each member was eager to seize the momentum in 2020. Then the world shut down.

Forced to cancel their spring and summer tours, State Faults embraced the post-pandemic landscape by immersing themselves in fresh material. After a year of intensive writing, they teamed up with producer Chris Teti (The World Is A Beautiful Place…) in Burlington, Connecticut to craft their fourth studio album, "Children of the Moon." With the world still largely shut down, the band would spend the next several years biding their time, navigating numerous post production delays, financial hardships, personal misfortune and a near break-up before finally finding the right opportunity to present the album to the world. Pushing the boundaries of the screamo genre, COTM sees the band exhibiting their creative evolution with each track on the album.

Lush string arrangements of the opener, "Blood Moon," seamlessly delivers a blend heavy riffs and melodic precision. "Palo Santo" continues with infectious hooks and a rare showcase of Jonny Andrew's singing amidst his signature screams, while "Heat Death" and "Divination" showcase the band at their heaviest. Midway through, the band ventures into uncharted territory with the ambitious 10-minute prog/screamo odyssey, "No Gospel." The song features psychedelic guitar work, danceable drum and bass rhythms, and a downtempo second half immersed in spaced-out drones and reverb-soaked vocals. The album concludes with the post-rock closer, "Bodega Head," an intricately arranged ballad that builds from gentle acoustic guitar to a crescendo of haunting strings, galloping drums, and a soaring electric guitar solo. State Faults sounds as massive as ever here and "Children of the Moon" stands as a testament to band brimming with creative energy.

Eye For An Eye "Omega Drone / Who"

LP - $17.25
STREET DATE: 7/19/24
CAT#: DW259
LABEL: Deathwish Inc.

Boston has been at the center of Traditional Punk/Hardcore since the genre's inception in the early 1980s. Often times the modern narrative stays with the primordial (FU's, Slapshot, SSD, Gang Green, etc.) However in the late 1980s an equally influential Melodic Hardcore scene emerged with new musical sounds and introspective ideas. The band at the heart of this generational shift was Eye For An Eye.

Eye For An Eye formed in 1988. After dozens of legendary live shows they landed on the lineup of: Jason Grotrian, Kevin Norton, Lloyd Stanley, and Thos Niles. Soon after they released the 5 song "Omega Drone" EP on Blackout! Records (Killing Time, Outburst) in 1991. Recorded at Syncro Sound in Boston (The Cars, Bad Brains, etc), "Omega Drone" introduced Eye For An Eye to the underground on a larger level. Supporting the release, the band played alongside contemporaries BURN, Quicksand, SOIA, and Shelter all throughout the United States.

In 1992, Eye For An Eye once again entered Syncro Sound, recording the 4 song "Who" EP for the Tribe Records label. This release also marks the addition of musician/engineer Dean Baltulonis (Supertouch, Wrecking Crew, etc.) who joined the band on second guitar. "Who" is considered one of the greatest and under appreciated EPs of the time. Showing Eye For An Eye leaning more into their melodious and philosophical ideas more than ever before.

Eye For An Eye disbanded later that year. Members went their separate ways with some playing in Shelter, 454 Big Block, Straight Faced, The Eulogy, La Gritona, Anodyne, 27, Windmills By The Ocean, and more. Others went onto be active behind-the-scenes with Grotrian excelling in graphic design work (Judge, etc.) and Baltulonis establishing himself as a respected audio engineer with his studio The Wild Arctic.

"Omega Drone / Who" is both EPs from Eye For An Eye fully remixed and remastered by Alex Garcia-Rivera (Kingpin, American Nightmare, etc.) at Mystic Valley Studio. Presented as one LP collection, these nine songs encapsulate the moment when hardcore generationally began to evolve, influencing present and future creators alike. Changing the course of the Boston underground in soul and mind forever.

"Light Of Death" is the 15 song sophomore album from Umbra Vitae. Recorded by Kurt Ballou and Zach Weeks at God City Studios and mastered by Brad Boatright at Audiosiege.

"Leave Of Absence" emerges with a spine-chilling violin swell before erupting into duel guitar driven madness courtesy of Sean Martin (Twitching Tongues, ex-Hatebreed) and Mike McKenzie (The Red Chord). Umbra Vitae stay redlined with "Belief Is Obsolete" and "Clear Cutter", showcasing the electrifying rhythm section of Jon Rice (Uncle Acid, Tsjuder) and Greg Weeks (The Red Chord). Hook-laden "Anti-Spirit Machine" then takes center stage as a war cry for the downtrodden. From here Umbra Vitae continue to smash and thrash everything in sight. The discordant "Reality In Retrograde" races with a grinding blur into the lumbering "Past Tense" and darkly seductive "Velvet Black". Two songs that are metallic heaviness incarnate. "Twenty-Twenty Vision", "Algorithm Of Fear", and "Empty Vessel" then pick up the intensity, propelled by the poignant lyrical themes and inhuman vocal deliveries of Jacob Bannon (Converge). Lastly, the trinity of slow-crawl "Cause & Effect", ultra-violent "Deep End", and whirlwind "Nature vs. Nurture" continue to bludgeon, ushering in the interlinked "Fatal Flaw" and "Light Of Death" as the vicious finale to this modern metal masterpiece.

"Tools of Oppression / Rule by Deception" is the new full length album by The Hope Conspiracy. The album was engineered by Kurt Ballou and Zach Weeks at God City Studios. Artwork for the release was created by acclaimed artist Alexander Heir (Death/Traitors).

This is true sonic violence aimed at political division, economic manipulation, war profiteering, media propaganda and other vile forms of global oppression.

Air raid sirens wail as the foreboding "Those Who Gave Us Yesterday" and "The Prophets and Doom" explode forth like burning shrapnel. The hell ride continues with "A Struggle For Power" and "Live In Fear", two vicious blasts supercharged with malice and contempt. "Shock By Shock" and "Of A Dying Nation" introduce doom and gloom heaviness, grinding down the tempo to a mid-paced barrage. "Confusion/Chaos/Misery" picks up the pace, going scorched-earth policy on the sociopolitical nightmares that ensnare us all while "Broken Vessels" plows into overdrive about mental illness and addiction as a whole. This leads to "The West Is Dead" a dystopian hook laden hardcore anthem, and epic closer "The Specter Looms"; An ominous soundtrack to the steady decline of our modern age.

There is no question, The Hope Conspiracy is back to make a cold hard statement about existence in the end times.

Bossk ".4"

2xLP - $22.50 / CD - $8.00
LP UPC: 791689665504
CD UPC: 791689665498
STREET DATE: 5/10/24
CAT#: DW244
LABEL: Deathwish Inc.

One of the shining beacons of the UK post-metal scene, Bossk have steadily built up an unrepentantly loyal following since 2005. Before they reach the big 20, the band are taking this opportunity to take pause and reflect on their past and all the hard graft that has led them to become one of the most lauded bands in the genre. .4, the latest in a series of numbered releases that presents material outside the remit of Bossk's full-length album output, is a celebration of those 20 years and provides an enticing aperitif for their 3rd album proper, to be released sometime in 2025.

As is tradition with these numbered releases, .4 is not a Bossk album in the conventional sense, instead forging a more experimental path by presenting re-worked versions of some old favourites, as well as a smattering of re-recorded songs that only the most obsessed Bossk fan will be familiar with.

One deciding factor that emboldened Bossk to celebrate their past is the amicable departure of vocalist Sam Marsh due to his permanent relocation to the United States. The band wanted to give Sam an epic recorded send-off and the colossal 13-minute Events Occur in Real Time provides a fitting farewell for the vocalist, who's guttural razor-wire screams have provided tectonic shifting textures to the band since their inception in 2005. Acting as the centrepiece of .4, this is the first studio take of the song ever recorded, conceived as it was in 2008, just months before the band went on temporary hiatus. The only version available prior was recorded live and released on a limited edition split 12" with long gone fellow post-metal band Rinoa. .4 gives Bossk the opportunity to record the song in a new and reimagined way, replete with mariachi-style trumpet work courtesy of Adam Faires.

The band were keen to re-visit Truth, a song they identify as one of the most important in their early repertoire. Plans to record an acoustic version of the song were soon abandoned when the band were tagged in a vocal cover of the song on Instagram by Dubai-based composer Sheenagh Murray. Her rendition galvanised Bossk to re-write the song entirely from the ground up with her vocals in mind, which has resulted in the rendition heard on .4, imaginatively titled Truth II, which sounds almost unrecognisable from the original, showing the growth the band have made in the past 14 years.

In a move that displays the band's love of collaboration, this collection presents four classic Bossk tracks re-worked by their contemporaries, giving a new lease of life to songs that have become staples of Bossk's set. First up is Manchester-based post metal project Pijn's take on fan favourite Kobe, an interpretation that initially suggests a more sedate take on the song that gradually swells into a symphony of swirling strings and percussion that accelerando to an almighty climax. Japanese experimentalists in heavy music Endon previously collaborated for the second full-length album Migration released in 2021. White Stork, the song that opened that album, is presented here with the Bossk elements stripped back entirely, so it's now possible for the listener to immerse themselves in the disquieting noise drone textures the band added to Migration without distraction. Matthew Daly and Robin Southby of British instrumental quintet Maybeshewill contributed a beautiful piano rendition of The Reverie for inclusion on .4, which echoes the ambient neo-classical works of Nils Frahm, Ólafur Arnaulds and Philip Glass. The last collaboration comes courtesy of Canadian prog-psych duo Crown Lands who add moog synths, Tool-esque percussion and soaring dynamics to their interpretation of The Reverie II that completely revitalises and enhances the epic concluding track to Bossk's 2016 debut full-length Audio Noir.

Another lost treasure on .4 is Albert, a new song that has only been played once at ArcTanGent festival in 2019. Despite including it in that set, the band were never happy with it, until drummer Nick Corney completely reworked it into the version here, which displays the influence of electronic artists on Bossk such as Boards of Canada, Battles, Nine Inch Nails and DJ Shadow.
The remaining two tracks that make up this compilation were originally only available on 2008 live video .3. A remix of I by Twin Zero guitarist Reuben Gotto is the oldest song on .4, dating back to 2006 shortly after the band's debut EP release of the same name. The other track is 181 to Beulah, a song written by Bossk guitarist Alex Hamilton which, like Events Occur in Real Time, has only previously been released as a live track. The song, which is played entirely on guitar, ends this 65-minute collection on a sombre note, as gently reverberant chords ring out across a mellow bed of harmonious feedback, recalling the more tranquil, ambient experimentation of bands like This Will Destroy You and Hammock. As a segue-way into whatever the future may hold, it's about as laid-back and serene as Bossk has ever been.

With .4, Bossk fully intend to put a full stop on one era, before beginning a new chapter in 2026, a year which will see the release of a brand new full-length album of original material, their 3rd in total, and the recorded debut of vocalist Simon Wright, who has been playing with the band for the past 4 years and is now fully integrated into the band. - Remfry Dedman, March 2024

Frail Body is a three piece band from Rockford, IL.

"Artificial Bouquet" is an eleven song album by Frail Body. Produced, engineered, and recorded by Pete Grossmann at Bricktop Recording, and mastered by Jack Shirley at The Atomic Garden (Deafheaven, Joyce Manor, Loma Prieta).

Opening track "Scaffolding" explodes out of the gate with dizzying speed before descending into a wash of discordant melody. "Berth" and "Critique Programme" then inject pulse-pounding tempo shifts and unorthodox heavy riffing into the fray. "Devotion" plays as a stunning ebb and flow epic that shows method to their musical chaos. "Monolith" and "Refrain" then blur the lines between post-hardcore and melodic black metal in their frantic approach. These lead to "No Resolution" and "Runaway"; two slow build numbers that showcase the otherworldly dynamics Frail Body possess. "Horizon Line" follows this path as it builds to a bone-shaking crescendo. Lastly "Another Year Removed" serves as an instrumental bridge to closer "A Capsule In The Sediment". A song that empties the emotional tank for all to bear witness. All of it so raw and beautifully out of control.

Modern Life Is War "Tribulation Worksongs"

12"EP - $17.25
STREET DATE: 3/22/24
CAT#: DW243
LABEL: Deathwish Inc.

"Tribulation Worksongs" was recorded by Luke Tweedy at Flat Black Studios, mixed by Kurt Ballou at God City Studios, and mastered by Brad Boatright at Audiosiege. The session was originally released as a series of three 7"EPs between 2018 and 2021. In their initial presentation, the lyrics/credits of each song were typed by vocalist/lyricist Jeff Eaton on his 1950's Royal "Quiet De Luxe" typewriter. These were later hand stamped on the front and back covers of the EP by artist J. Bannon, making each cover totally unique. The labels of the vinyl were also hand stamped before final assembly by the people at Deathwish.

For 2024, Modern Life Is War present the "Tribulation Worksongs" sessions as a one 12"EP/Digital album. This release combines all three 7"EPs with "End Times Dub", a dub version of "Feels Like End Times", reimagined by Urian Hackney (Rough Francis, Iggy Pop, The Armed, etc). The packaging of the release is a combination of visual work from Jeffrey Eaton, Thomas Hooper, and J. Bannon.

Deep Sage, Gouge Away's third studio album, started coming together in 2019 during sound checks and in small pockets of downtime between tours. In early 2020, they demoed with Brok Mende in an unassuming storage unit in Orlando. They pulled influence not only from the nostalgia of the bands they grew up listening to but also developed the sense of urgency, noise, and introspective lyrics they felt most represented them. Those demos helped shape the songs into the finished record that Deep Sage would become.

Then everything came to a halt in 2020 when a full year of plans were canceled in an instant. With the rug pulled out from under them, their backs against the wall, and no way to change the situation they were in, the members of Gouge Away had no choice but to go on a hiatus. They moved to different parts of the country and focused on their personal lives, accepting that those songs were never going to see the light of day.

But the songs lived as files waiting to be rediscovered and every once in a while, they'd get the urge to listen to them again. On New Year's Eve just before 2022, they decided to reconnect and finish writing the album with Portland, OR becoming their new writing location. While everyone was in town for a writing session, Militarie Gun had a show down the street at Mano Oculta and invited Gouge Away to play a couple of songs during their set as a surprise. It was the first show the band had played in three years and the live debut of "Maybe Blue". Energized by the reaction, the band finished writing. They had an overabundance of material, slashing songs from the final tracklist left and right. They not only elaborated on the urgent and abrasive qualities they were known for but broadened their melodic traits too.

Deep Sage was recorded with Jack Shirley at Atomic Garden East in March 2023 completely analog and almost entirely live. The band recorded together in a live room while Christina was in an isolation booth. Her vocals projected from a monitor so the band could hear her. The goal of recording live was to sound like five friends playing in a room together, just like where they started in Florida. Unpolished and far from being over-produced, this is what the heart of Gouge Away has always been.

The Hope Conspiracy "Confusion/Chaos/Misery"

12"EP - $17.25
12"EP UPC: 791689666082
STREET DATE: 2/23/24
CAT#: DW254
LABEL: Deathwish Inc.

"Your mind is not your own
Manipulated just like everyone else
What you think, what you know
A poison seed will grow and grow"

After nearly 14 years The Hope Conspiracy have emerged from their bunker to a reality entangled by this unwavering truth.

Since their last release (True Nihilist, 2009) members have been active in a multitude of bands; All Pigs Must Die, Hesitation Wounds, Lies, Paint It Black, Spiral Heads, Ways Away and more. Efforts in the above may have kept them musically sharp, but it was the pressures and stresses of our present day dystopia that awoke The Hope Conspiracy. Serving as the catalyst for some of the most vicious songs they have ever created in their legendary career.

"Confusion/Chaos/Misery" is a four song EP by The Hope Conspiracy, engineered by Kurt Ballou and Zach Weeks at God City Studios. Artwork for the release was created by acclaimed artist Alexander Heir (Death/Traitors).

The title track is a sonically violent return to form for The Hope Conspiracy. Lyrically reading as scorched-earth policy for the sociopolitical nightmare that entangles us all.

"A Struggle For Power" is a near perfect D-Beat ripper, super-charged with palatable lyrical vitriol. While "Nail In The Coffin" ominously rumbles before bulldozing forward with immense power. The closer is a cover of the deep-cut classic "Dogfight", penned by Swedish crust legends Anti Cimex. A fitting track to revisit amid these turbulent modern times.

When all is said and done, this new chapter of The Hope Conspiracy comes into focus. Time passing has stripped away the unnecessary to reveal a hardcore band in their most primal form yet.

And this is just the beginning...

  1. Confusion/Chaos/Misery

Touché Amoré "Is Survived By: Revived"

LP - $17.25
LP UPC: 791689665795
STREET DATE: 1/19/24
CAT#: DW252
LABEL: Deathwish Inc.

It's not hyperbole to state that Touché Amoré's third album Is Survived By is the band's most pivotal album. Released 10 years ago on September 24th, 2013 via Deathwish Inc., Is Survived By tackles the complicated nature of leaving a lasting legacy and the uncertainty that surrounds that; ultimately resulting in a record about learning to find the validation and love within one's self. Produced by the legendary Brad Wood (Sunny Day Real Estate, Liz Phair, mewithoutYou), the recording sessions were a lesson in growth for the Los Angeles quintet - vocalist Jeremy Bolm, guitarists Nick Steinhardt and Clayton Stevens, bassist Tyler Kirby, and drummer Elliot Babin - as the band transformed from a group of individuals who play hardcore songs to the established headlining act that Touché Amoré is today.

Is Survived By received critical acclaim from the likes of Pitchfork, The A.V. Club, The Needle Drop, and more - resulting in the album being 13th highest rated album of 2013 per Metacritic. It was also the band's first record to chart on the U.S. Billboard 200, peaking at 85. But most importantly, Is Survived By is beloved by fans new and old. "When the reviews started to come out for it - for example, Pitchfork was really kind about it - I was shocked," explains Bolm. "I really didn't know how well we did. And then when it suddenly had such a positive response, I can't explain how taken aback I was."

For the past decade it's been bittersweet as the band has felt less than satisfied with the record's sound - a result of the band's overthinking and underpreparedness.

So a 10 year anniversary felt like the perfect time to tap Wood and Emily Lazar (the same team behind Stage Four) to remix and remaster Is Survived By. "I've always had a really hard time with the way this record sounds," explains Bolm. "I've unfortunately been oversharing and vocal about that for a number of years, but when we went to Brad to remix it, the main direction that I gave him was to make this sound more like Stage Four, and I think he killed it. He found that middle ground to where everything now compliments each other and there's far more clarity overall."

No longer does Is Survived By feel claustrophobic as if each layer of sound is fighting one another. Instead, Bolm's signature vocals flow in unison with Stevens and Steinhardt's creative, thoughtful guitar work, while the stellar rhythm section of Kirby and Babin provide a fervent punch to each song. Side A favorites like "Just Exist" and "DNA" hit with a new intensity, while the lusciousness within "Harbor" feels more defined. The Side B tracks may benefit the most - the Interpol influence shines throughout "Kerosene", and the slow burn build on "Non Fiction" is heard with more definition than ever before. There is a new found sense of brightness throughout the album's twelve tracks without losing any of the character from the original recordings. The lessons Bolm has learned over the years were also applied to the remaster. "I do feel a lot better about it," he says. "Everything kicks and everything pumps on this remix and remaster and I feel like 'Wow.' I almost feel like I'm hearing these songs for the first time again."

It wouldn't be an official Touché Amoré project without elaborate and immersive packaging courtesy of guitarist Nick Steinhardt. The now iconic artwork of the band standing in the shadow of the Los Angeles skyline is vibrant as ever, with 5 expanded colorways featuring a different essay about the album from each band member + a new "wildfire" orange with liner notes containing references to that era. Essays from Balance and Composure's Jon Simmons, Drug Church and Self Defense Family's Patrick Kindlon, producer Brad Wood, and more. Touché Amoré always give the full 100% to the visual medium as it does to the music, and this 10th anniversary reissue is no different.

Is Survived By is a cathartic record about wanting to be heard and understood and how you'll be remembered. A perfect snapshot of understanding your past and looking towards the future. It's why this record remains incredibly cherished by so many listeners, achieving that legacy it set out for a decade ago. "When I hear people say that this is their favorite record, it honestly makes me feel really, really good because it reminds me that my ears are different from the listeners," Bolm reveals. "That's important to remember. So to have something that you have felt down about, be praised, I mean, you can't ask for anything better."

Deafheaven's monolithic second LP Sunbather, was not only a massive success in 2013, it created a radical shift in heavy music culture, an acceptance of the genre by previous outsiders, and a trailblazing sound that heretofore hadn't been heard outside of learned circles. It was a reville introducing the changing of the guard in metal, featuring phenomenal reviews across the board, and breaking the mold used by buttoned-up indie types and false-flag musical dilettantes intent on keeping the status quo.

A maverick release in every facet, the cornerstone for the triumph that is Sunbather truly lies in its world class songwriting. From the opening anthem "Dream House,'' it's clear to see that Deafheaven was soaring triumphantly into the unknown, through the emotional highs and lows, the fire and rain, and onto the unseen road ahead. Lyrically, Sunbather examines themes of existentialism, diving headfirst into the abyss, and the pursuit of self-discovery. The album's title itself is similar in scope, representing the embrace of the light and movement out of the dark unknown.

Sunbather takes influence from the majesty of early Emperor and underground US heroes Weakling, the dark beauty of France's Alcest, the introspective nature of post-rock and shoegaze gods like Mogwai and Slowdive, as well as the DIY spirit of punk ranging from Fugazi to Man is the Bastard to create a new realm for their emotional and expansive epics. The result is the nihilism and icy darkness found in black metal melding perfectly with the pensive, ethereal nature of shoegaze and the expansive dramatics of post-rock to create a new landscape. By juxtaposing propulsive and harsh blast beats and riffs against soaring melody, Deafheaven had refocused the blind-hate nature found at the kernel of black metal into a melancholic and singular journey to explore the unknown.

Considering metal's staunchly negative relationship with the press, Deafheaven's Sunbather was nothing less than a true triumph. An immediate success at the time of it's release, Sunbather blasted through the glass ceiling that limited so many other heavy music bands before them. Lauded by virtually every major critical outlet, Sunbather is the picture perfect ideal of a music darling-- leading to sold out shows around the globe in increasing numbers. Sunbather would eventually become a year end favorite, repeatedly named one of the best albums of 2013 and landing on top 10 lists that were previously alien to heavy music-- outlets like Pitchfork, Rolling Stone, the New York Times and the like. And while the critics were dogpiling on the compliments, the conservative nature of heavy metal could not help but spin things in the opposite direction. As the saying goes, 'the first one through the door catches all the bullets.'

"The easy answer was it was totally positive and overwhelming," says founding guitarist Kerry McCoy with a bit of a chuckle when asked about his feelings about the response to Sunbather. "But in actuality it was also kind of frustrating. We were grateful for the positive notes, but there were people who thought we were the worst thing to ever happen to metal and others who thought that we claimed to invent the genre. Neither were true."

In addition to the game-changing musical approach, the band's aesthetics were nothing if not utterly controversial as well. Designer Nick Steinhardt's striking cover with use of a highly stylized font and a pale pink as the chosen color is not only a masterstroke in contemporary design, it was a true middle finger to the black metal establishment-- one that prided itself on a lo-fi black and white aesthetic. The bright and easily recognizable cover openly positioned the album as a true outsider unafraid to duck genre boundaries.

Formed in 2010 in San Francisco, California with the core duo of George Clarke and McCoy, the pair completed their debut demo with Jack Shirley, who would eventually helm Sunbather, releasing it on limited cassette. The cassette became an underground phenomenon, leading to a record deal with Deathwish Inc who released the cassette in limited numbers on seven-inch. After recruiting a live band, the five piece recorded their debut LP Roads to Judah and embarked on a series of shorter tours to promote the release. When the time came for the follow-up, the band slimmed back down to the original duo and added drummer Daniel Tracey-- creating what many believe to be one of the most important musical statements of the '10s. The release would be their third with Jack Shirley. "Honestly, Sunbather gave us a career," says McCoy with candor. "Before then we were working jobs and had these grandiose dreams, but that was the record that turned us into a real band. Because of that record, we ended up meeting a lot of people around the world that changed our lives and set us on the path we're on now."

Ten years later, Deafheaven is nothing less than a mammoth and live touring juggernaut, with fans across the far reaches of the earth and a flawless live lineup of Shiv Mehra on guitar (joined in 2013) and Chris Johnson on bass (2017) in addition to Clarke, McCoy and Tracey. One of the most important and original rock bands of the past fifteen years, the long-awaited reissue of this pivotal release celebrates its tenth anniversary with a fresh shine and coat of paint-- a newly remixed and remastered sound by original producer Jack Shirley with available spacial audio, an updated look to the packaging in all formats courtesy of the album's original designer Nick Steinhardt, and deluxe color vinyl that includes a gatefold jacket with spot UV printing and 2 full-color printed inner sleeves. "You, Me, & The Violence" explodes out of the gates with "Pilori", a statement of personal independence among society's faults and fractures. Birds In Row continue down this road, expressing disdain in songs like "Cages", "Guillotine", and "Walter Freeman". All of them musically harboring a tangle of emotional vocals and rabid distortion. Just when it feels like the album is almost too overpowering, Birds In Row unfurl a moment of clarity in "Last Last Chance", a haunting guitar and vocal break. The control of their dynamics is masterful work. "You, Me, & The Violence" and "Grey Hair" are near perfect examples of this, shifting between searing and serene in tone. And if you weren't in awe of Birds In Row in the first eleven songs, the twelve minute closer "Lovers Have Their Say" will leave you floored.

Mad Honey are a dream-pop band from Oklahoma City, OK.

"Satellite Aphrodite" is the debut album from Mad Honey. The exciting first chapter of a band destined to be part of the modern indie-rock lexicon for years to come.

As opener "Tuff's Last Stand" emerges, we are transported into Mad Honey's lush world of musical melancholy. This leads to the hazy and hook laden "Heavier Still", "Fold", and "Larkspur". Unforgettable songs that showcase a sophistication deep within Mad Honey's multi-layered approach. At the midpoint where many albums meander, "Satellite Aphrodite" continues to ascend. "Eileen", "E.T.Y.N", "R U Feeling It", and "Psycho" all shimmer and sway with punk heart and pop sensibility unlike anything else out there today. The acoustic heavy "Kamakura" then playfully brings us to "Concentration" and poignant title track. Two infectious songs that show Mad Honey discovering their own youthful creative magic in real time.

LABEL: Deathwish Inc.

Engineered by Kurt Ballou at the band's longtime studio/practice spot God City, "No Heroes" shows the band exploring new sonic textures while still retaining the palpable energy they've become known for. While the album blazes out of the gate with the aptly titled "Heartache," songs like "Orphaned" and the intense "Plagues" prove that breakneck speed and heaviness aren't necessarily interrelated, and when Converge lower the tempo, they're able to effortlessly transcend traditional notions of heaviness. Devotees of "Jane Doe" will also be blown away by epic tracks like the nine-minute "Grim Heart/Black Rose," a doom masterpiece which features guest vocals from Only Living Witness' Jonah Jenkins. From Bannon's captivating artwork and introspective lyrics to Ballou's masterful production techniques, Converge's artistic vision has always separated the band from their peers, and "No Heroes" is no exception. Simply a great album.

The ninth full-length from the Boston-based heavy-music innovators--vocalist Jacob Bannon, guitarist Kurt Ballou, bassist Nate Newton, and drummer Ben Koller--The Dusk In Us proves to be both dark and hopeful, abrasive and melodic, devastating and powerfully cathartic.

In recording The Dusk In Us, Converge once again worked in Ballou's renowned Godcity Studios in Salem, Massachusetts. Produced by the band and mixed by Ballou, the album matches its raw energy with a subculture-crossing inventiveness that's earned Converge longtime reverence within the punk, metal, and hardcore scenes. One of Converge's most dynamic and avant-garde albums to date, The Dusk In Us unfolds with an uncompromising honesty born from "writing about experiences in my life and working through the complexities of those things through song," as Bannon explains.

On the album-opening "A Single Tear," pummeling drums and caustic riffs form the backdrop to strikingly vulnerable lyrics like "When I held you for the first time/I knew I had to survive." ("'A Single Tear' is about becoming a parent, and the perspective and strength it can give," Bannon notes.) With its abrasive guitar work and menacing undertones, "Under Duress" brings a tortured howl to lyrics channeling what Bannon describes as "my emotional reaction to the complex world in which we live." A frenzied blast of pure fury, "I Can Tell You About Pain" offers what NPR recently hailed as "hardcore-fueled extreme music that simultaneously elevates and destroys." And on the seven-minute-plus title track to The Dusk in Us, Converge deliver a slow-building, quietly haunting epic of ethereal beauty.

Converge formed in Massachusetts in 1990, then made their debut with 1994's Halo in a Haystack. Soon regarded as pioneers within the aggressive music arena, the band had a major breakthrough with their landmark album Jane Doe--a 2001 release praised as "iconic" by the A.V. Club (who also noted that Jane Doe "reaches canonical status with every re-listen"). The Dusk In Us arrives as the follow-up to 2012's All We Love We Leave Behind, an album that Consequence Of Sound called "as skull-cleaving as it is beautiful" and that made its way onto Pitchfork's Best New Music list.

While The Dusk In Us finds Converge defying boundaries and pushing into new sonic terrain, it's also a natural progression for a band that's long thrived on making music that both challenges and connects. "Our only goal is to create something that moves us and resonates with us emotionally," says Bannon. "For us, it's simply a new album about new chapters in our lives. We are a very 'human' band--always have been--and our songs are all rooted in our real-life experiences. The Dusk In Us is that new chapter, just as previous records were before that."
