As Friends Rust "Any Joy"

LP - $16.60 / CD - $10.70
STREET DATE: 9/8/23
CAT#: EH090
LABEL: End Hits

“When did time start flying by so fast? It’s getting harder to recall the past.” The opening lines of As Friends Rust’s upcoming album Any Joy are a fitting start for a band that has existed in one form or another for over 25 years (minus a hiatus from 2002-2008). Originally formed in the late ‘90s, As Friends Rust has been through a few iterations, but it is the core line-up of vocalist Damien Moyal, guitarist Joseph Simmons, guitarist James Glayat, and drummer Timothy Kirkpatrick that are creating thought-provoking melodic punk music for the modern age. With three EPs, two 7 inches, and a full-length in their history, As Friends Rust already have a lifetime of work in their pocket, but the seven songs on Any Joy might just be their most striking yet.

Originating in Gainesville, Florida and now spread across the country, As Friends Rust wrote, recorded, and produced Any Joy mostly from the comfort of their own homes. Vocals in Ann Arbor, MI, guitars in Gainesville, FL and Brooklyn, NY, with the exception of the drums, which were recorded in a studio by John Howard in Gainesville. Not currently having a permanent bassist, the band called upon friend Andrew Seward (of Against Me!) to play bass on most of the record, with additional contributions from Simmons. Mixed by James Paul Wisner in Orlando, FL and mastered by Matthias Lohmöller in Germany, the creation of the album was truly a collaborative and international effort. Working in separate spaces allowed the band to experiment more as the songs came together, resulting in a familiar but fresh sound that has more bite than past releases. It’s more focused, more direct, more confrontational, more catchy, while still staying true to the band’s melodic punk and hardcore roots.

Lyrics tackle everything from the emptiness of emoticons as a form of communication on “Positive Mental Platitude” to the need for political and social activism versus the occurrences of daily life on “No Gods, Some Masters.”

Diving deeper in, Moyal states: “The album is pretty varied topically, but there is a throughline in the way topics are addressed. In the past, as with many hardcore bands, ideas were presented from a more defined perspective, with a self-assuredness that, in retrospect, is pretty laughable given our ages at the time. On this album, most of the songs are left open as unanswered questions, shining light on an issue or even debating an issue from multiple perspectives, but ultimately leaving things unresolved. We’re trying to explore the nuances that sometimes get missed, or that we’re often too emotionally charged to consider.”

As the record sends off with the repetitive “We care, but not so much,” it sums up the attitude that As Friends Rust are making music for themselves, not for nostalgia, not for a paycheck, but to be shared with their long-time fans and anyone who wants to listen.

The ninth full-length from the Boston-based heavy-music innovators--vocalist Jacob Bannon, guitarist Kurt Ballou, bassist Nate Newton, and drummer Ben Koller--The Dusk In Us proves to be both dark and hopeful, abrasive and melodic, devastating and powerfully cathartic.

In recording The Dusk In Us, Converge once again worked in Ballou's renowned Godcity Studios in Salem, Massachusetts. Produced by the band and mixed by Ballou, the album matches its raw energy with a subculture-crossing inventiveness that's earned Converge longtime reverence within the punk, metal, and hardcore scenes. One of Converge's most dynamic and avant-garde albums to date, The Dusk In Us unfolds with an uncompromising honesty born from "writing about experiences in my life and working through the complexities of those things through song," as Bannon explains.

On the album-opening "A Single Tear," pummeling drums and caustic riffs form the backdrop to strikingly vulnerable lyrics like "When I held you for the first time/I knew I had to survive." ("'A Single Tear' is about becoming a parent, and the perspective and strength it can give," Bannon notes.) With its abrasive guitar work and menacing undertones, "Under Duress" brings a tortured howl to lyrics channeling what Bannon describes as "my emotional reaction to the complex world in which we live." A frenzied blast of pure fury, "I Can Tell You About Pain" offers what NPR recently hailed as "hardcore-fueled extreme music that simultaneously elevates and destroys." And on the seven-minute-plus title track to The Dusk in Us, Converge deliver a slow-building, quietly haunting epic of ethereal beauty.

Converge formed in Massachusetts in 1990, then made their debut with 1994's Halo in a Haystack. Soon regarded as pioneers within the aggressive music arena, the band had a major breakthrough with their landmark album Jane Doe--a 2001 release praised as "iconic" by the A.V. Club (who also noted that Jane Doe "reaches canonical status with every re-listen"). The Dusk In Us arrives as the follow-up to 2012's All We Love We Leave Behind, an album that Consequence Of Sound called "as skull-cleaving as it is beautiful" and that made its way onto Pitchfork's Best New Music list.

While The Dusk In Us finds Converge defying boundaries and pushing into new sonic terrain, it's also a natural progression for a band that's long thrived on making music that both challenges and connects. "Our only goal is to create something that moves us and resonates with us emotionally," says Bannon. "For us, it's simply a new album about new chapters in our lives. We are a very 'human' band--always have been--and our songs are all rooted in our real-life experiences. The Dusk In Us is that new chapter, just as previous records were before that."

Celestial Sanctuary "Insatiable Thirst For Torment"

LP - $17.90 / CD - $8.75
STREET DATE: 8/25/23
CAT#: CRR202
LABEL: Church Road

Celestial Sanctuary's form of Death Metal is Feral, Aggressive and in your face - with the sole intent of creating the sonic equivalent of taking a boot to the chin. The band emerged in late 2019 with their 'MASS EXTINCTION' demo, displaying their love of death metal old and new - from the heaving death doom passages, neck snapping fast parts and skull crushing, stomp-inducing riffs all neatly presented in it's 8 minute run time; turning heads the world over.

Celestial Sanctuary then entered the studio to record their debut album 'SOUL DIMINISHED' which was released in March 2021 by Church Road Records (EU/UK) and Redefining Darkness Records - cementing them as the flag bearers of the NEW WAVE OF BRITISH DEATH METAL.

CELESTIAL SANCTUARY made their live debut at a sold out headline show at Camden's BLACK HEART in the September of that year, before going on an unrelenting campaign of shows supporting the likes of OBITUARY, GATECREEPER, CATTLE DECAPITATION, UNDEATH, SANGUISUGABOGG... certifying that the UK once again had a death metal band that could go toe-to-toe with the US heavyweights in the genre.

With a brief respite in playing and touring, CELESTIAL SANCTUARY entered the studio to record their unhinged sophomore album 'INSATIABLE THIRST FOR TORMENT' which will be released AUGUST 25th 2023 by Church Road Records.

"This album fully unleashes what we're all about. It's heavier, it's faster and it's way more unhingned" Says Tom Cronin "We wanted to create something that shows we're 'NOT ANOTHER OLD SCHOOL DEATH METAL BAND' and I think we've proven that and then some. With influences stretching from that gurn inducing sludge from the first Mastodon and Nerosis records to the technicality of Nile and Dying Fetus. This is a modern Death Metal record for fans of the EXTREME!!!'

Pageninetynine "Singles"

LP - $17.25
LP UPC: 843563166932
STREET DATE: 8/25/23
CAT#: VIS03
LABEL: Persistent Vision

After being out-of-print for over a decade, Pageninetynine and new Richmond, Virginia-based label Persistent Vision have partnered to reissue the band's Singles LP to make this collection available for a new generation of fans.

The Singles collection documents a band that was constantly experimenting and organically growing within the realm of heavy music. The collection brings together the band's original demo tape, an early EP, a compilation track, and splits with Enemy Soil, City of Caterpillar, Circle Takes The Square, Reactor No. 7, and Process Is Dead spanning the band's original run from 1997 to 2003.

Sequenced to trace the band's history in reverse, the album opens with the experimental droner of "Goodbye Face" from their final release before taking listeners on a journey touching on loose improvised jams, piano samples, and syncopated screamo/punk freakouts ending on the raw hardcore-inspired punk energy of their demo tape.

"I think every single record was us trying to push the creativity further and further," Mike Taylor, guitarist, said when reflecting on the collection.

"The more we toured and played, we took on every influence possible. This meant we wrote long songs, short songs, fast songs, slow songs, improvised, experimented with different tunings, and wrote pretty and ugly parts."

It's all there in the Singles LP. Essential for completists, the collection showcases the sound of friends seeing where their ideas take them.

CHERUBS "Heroin Man"

LP - $17.25 / CD - $8.00 / CASSETTE - $8.00
STREET DATE: 8/4/23
CAT#: BPR-90
LABEL: Brutal Panda

Highly anticipated vinyl repress of the all-time noise rock classic true to the original 1994 pressing.

Heroin Man stands as both the chronological center of the Cherubs catalog, and it's defining moment. As one of noise rock's finest moments, Heroin Man is both a delicate, tragic statement and send-off to a friend who had OD'd, and a bellowing, roaring, over-amped screwball masterpiece of Butthole Surfers mayhem and Husker Du pop structures. It's sometimes difficult to distinguish between Kevin Whitley's guitar and Owen McMahon's bass, and that's precisely the point -- this is noise rock; and still at other's, Whitley's guitar is a washing, white-noise counterpoint to the pummeling rhythm section. This is a dense, sprawling, spiraling work showing a band peaking aesthetically, with perhaps an even more ambitious album to follow. Unfortunately, due to the usual host of reasons, that never occurred. Heroin Man was CHERUBS final studio album until their reformation 20+ years later.

TRACK LISTING:

  1. Stag Party

CHERUBS "Icing (30th Anniversary Reissue)"

LP - $17.25 / CD - $8.00 / CASSETTE - $8.00
STREET DATE: 8/4/23
CAT#: BPR-91
LABEL: Brutal Panda

30+ years ago in Austin, TX 1992, cult kings of noise rock, CHERUBS, released their debut album, Icing, via Butthole Surfers drummer, King Coffey's, label Trance Syndicate. Originally recorded and produced by Mr. Colson (L7, Dwarves, Linkin Park), Icing has now been fully remastered and remixed from the original source tapes by Eric Wofford (Explosions in the Sky, Young Widows, The Black Angels), complete with new album art by the band's Kevin Whitley.

Much darker, aggressive and rawer than the material CHERUBS would become known for, Icing captures the band at their most primitive form while hinting at the melodic intricacies they would develop over the years. While still very much a "noise rock" album, Icing brings together influences from Seattle's first wave of late 80's grunge alongside the influential "noise" scene happening in Austin throughout the 90's. The album's single "All Chickened Out" even received some airplay on BBC Radio 1 by John Peel…a sure sign of the prestige such ugly, aggressive and deconstructed "music" would receive over the coming decades. This is where it all started for CHERUBS and somehow it's still happening over three decades later.

TRACK LISTING:

  1. Sugary
  2. All Chickened Out
  3. Half a Rat

First time on vinyl since it's original release in 2015!

Austin, TX cult noise rock kings, Cherubs, return with 2 Ynfynyty, their first new recordings in over 20 years. Produced by Mike McCarthy (Spoon, ....And You Will Know Us By the Trail of Dead) and mastered by Howie Weinberg (Nirvana, Slayer) in the summer of 2014, 2 Ynfynyty finds the trio rejuvenated with a more dangerous sound then ever. Picking up where they left off while trekking down a few unexpected turns, Cherubs effortlessly mix distorted heaviness with sublime songcraft. If Queens of the Stone Age made a pummeling noise rock record, this would be it. The band's previous records (1992's Icing and 1994's Heroin Man) have reached legendary status in the noise rock world and this record will be no exception. 2 Ynfynyty proves that Cherbus' long hiatus was worth the two decade wait.

Fast, loud hardcore will never get old. "To Live and Withstand" clearly showcases this, where the majority of each song on the seven-song EP is just short of a minute and a half, yet packed with so much energy, emotion, and rhythm.

Anklebiter came right out of the gates in 2022 with their explosive demo. On their EP, they've only evolved what was heard prior. While still straightforward hardcore songs, Anklebiter's songwriting is stronger and more confident than ever. "I Am…" and "Pearl" show the band easily playing with tempo and creating a powerful dynamic that's tough not to dance to. Guitar solos and hooky bass lines are sprinkled throughout, adding more layers to the band's furious sound.

"To Live and Withstand" is full of rageful recollections of life, detailed with harsh imagery and expressed with bursts of spite. Anklebiter continues to resist, calloused, growing and withstanding.

Damien Done “Total Power”

LP - $15.95
STREET DATE: 7/28/23
CAT#: MOM074
LABEL: Mind Over Matter

Formed under Miami's neon lights and reborn in the post-industrial wastelands of Detroit, Damien Done plays gloomy post-punk, weaving unnerving tales through a distinct and narrative croon.

After decades as celebrated hardcore punk front-man, here Damien brings the angst of that legacy to a near-grinding halt, instead plodding forward with measured restraint and revealing influences as disparate -- and rarely-conjoined -- as gothic rock, new wave, disco and doom, with vocals that evoke comparisons to the sneering baritones of Billy Idol, Jim Morrison or Danzig.

After a lone full length album and a series of singles, EPs and oddball vinyl releases, Damien Done returns with their sophomore full length album, Total Power.

In stark contrast with 2020's To Night EP - a full-band recording with a massive, live sound - Total Power easily volleys between dark, goth-tinged rockers and minimal, electronic tracks; serving densely-layered synths and returning brooding new wave. The result is dynamic and unfolding, finding Damien Done's point of view fully realized, expressed boldly & with sophistication.

While the series of EPs and singles that have led us to Total Power might first serve as sonic disparity of the LP at hand, further listens reveal that they were simply a black-robed dress rehearsal for the maddening final show. The subject matter across Total Power covers self-abuse, murder, addiction, and unrequited love, often from the point of view of the antagonist. This lurid perspective offers a bone-chilling edge, even among the most upbeat songs on the album.

Here in the grips of Total Power, we look to the skies...but never to pray.

TRACK LISTING:

  1. Maw
  2. Black Moon
  3. Pray For Me
  4. Inexorcisable
  5. Young Drugs
  6. Always On Fire

The Sun's Journey Through The Night "Worldless"

LP - $19.40 / CD - $10.70 / Cassette - $10.70
STREET DATE: 7/28/23
CAT#: CRR201
LABEL: Church Road

The Sun's Journey Through The Night is the creation of its masked frontman, whose true identity has always been obscured and hidden. Names have come and gone, but the moniker that has been most consistent for the dark figure behind the project is "No One".

No One has spent four years crafting his signature style of chaotic and cathartic black metal. With themes that see deep personal trauma translated into narratives that explore creation, death, the universe and life beyond humanity.

With three albums behind him, each reaching a larger audience than the last, No One began assembling a live version of the band, in order to take his comic black metal from the solitary world of one-man black metal, to the live stage. The visceral energy of this live version of the project led to live musicians Lune, Deimos and Nereid joining the band to help write the monolithic new album "Wordless".

TRACK LISTING:

  1. Abolishing Consciousness
  2. Worldless
  3. Void Walker
  4. The Black Pyramid
  5. Grief, The Star

THIEV "Break/Fade"

LP - $13.35
STREET DATE: 7/28/23
CAT#: PRO-086
LABEL: Protagnoist Music

Something infectious and energetic was woven through the songs of 90's melodic punk, and THIEV are tapping directly into that vein again today. With influences such as Bad Religion, AFI, Lifetime, Pennywise, and Saves the Day, their approach is to play sincere melodic hardcore with a heavy west coast influence while sticking to their NJ pop-punk/hardcore roots. Those who yearn for the catchy hooks, tasty riffs, and anthemic choruses of yesteryear will find a veritable feast of such attributes on this vinyl release which contains both EP's. And alongside the formative elements of past influence, these tracks definitely find a firm anchor in the authenticity of the present with their conscious lyrics and emotively mature songwriting. Featuring members of bands such as Hundreds of AU, Silence Equals Death, Entropy, Lesser Minds, and more, the seasoned players in THIEV are hailing a resurgence of high-energy punk rock with a long memory and a keen eye to the future. Let's go!

Converge "Axe To Fall"

LP - $17.25
LP UPC:723314784359
STREET DATE: 7/21/23
CAT#: DW98
LABEL: Epitaph / Deathwish Inc.

It never ceases to amaze me how the things we initially dismiss, overlook, don’t notice can become the most important and meaningful to us and our lives.

The first time I saw Converge was in 1996 with Deadguy, Coalesce and a number of other bands whose names are now lost to memory in a Legion Hall in a rundown part of Buffalo, NY. I’d like to say they changed my life that night but they didn’t — not that night, anyway. However, there was something about the way their rail-thin singer (Jacob Bannon) threw himself without regard into his performance, and the audience, and glimpses of the more than then-typical Victory Records mosh in their music that spoke of things to come. If you told me that band (Converge, I would discover later while buying Deadguy merch) would become one of the most important to not only myself but to aggressive music and its various scenes and factions, I would have cracked a smile, at the very least. Funny, how things turn out.

Formed in the winter of 1990 in Boston, MA, during the rise and subsequent fall of the legendary Boston hardcore scene, Converge are unarguably one of the most important bands in the history of aggressive music. Through numerous line-up changes (the band are currently comprised of vocalist/visual design terrorist Jacob Bannon, drummer Ben Koller, guitarist/back-up vocalist Kurt Ballou and bassist/back-up vocalist Nate Newton), musical trends (mosh, tech, guys crying and wearing make-up, ’80s thrash revival) and the coming and going of more “the next great thing” than I care to recall, Converge have established themselves as leaders in the aggressive music underground.

It seems redundant to use the word “landmark” when discussing their musical canon, as almost every album is genre-defining, but Converge’s run is unparalleled. Releases such as Petitioning the Empty Sky (1997), When Forever Comes Crashing (1998), Jane Doe (2001), You Fail Me (2004) and No Heroes (2006) have established Converge as trendsetters and innovators, setting new standards in hardcore and metal with each release. These records have evolved the band (from their thrash-inspired, hardcore-drenched beginnings to slower, more ominous and atmospheric work to all-out Tsunami-of-hostility hell-bent on levelling creation) and produced new waves of followers and emulators with each successive work. Honestly, has there been a band more influential on past and present “successful” metal/hardcore acts as unaccredited? It’s true: integrity has its price.

After nearly 20 years, such a glorious run of releases and a live show that’s gone from flailing kids flailing against kids to legendary exorcism for both band and audience — watch the pit during “The Saddest Day” and tell me it’s not the closest thing to a near-religious experience atheists will ever have — Converge could be forgiven for releasing an endeavour that was simply good, okay, just maintaining their status quo. After all, it’s much easier to win the title than retain it, and even the greats slip from time to time. Axe To Fall (Converge’s third release for indie institution Epitaph Records), however, is no such relapse.

True to themselves and their art, as always, no matter the cost, Axe To Fall continues to push relentlessly forward, much like a shark that needs to always keep swimming to survive. Where No Heroes was a refinement and broadening of hostilities declared on previous assaults such as Jane Doe, Axe To Fall returns to the more AmRep-inspired noisecore abrasions of You Fail Me while also updating and making vital the thrash influences that defined earlier Converge efforts (Caring and Killing, Petitioning the Empty Sky) and retaining the hardcore hostilities and frantic pace so vital to their foundation. Of course, the experimental anguish and pleading for salvation are no mere sharpening of past knives but yet another leap forward in an existence full of them.

From frenetic, frantic opening track “Dark Horse,” which is a downhill avalanche of ferocity culminating in one of the heaviest riffs Converge have ever laid listeners to waste with, to “Worms Will Feed,” an ominous exploration that ebbs and flows, building upon crashing then retreating waves of music and lyrical condemnations (“the worms will find a way, the rats will find a way”), to the barely restrained chaos of “Losing Battle” and Axe To Fall’s sanguine, beautiful, climatic seven-minute-plus dénouement, “Wretched Word,” Axe To Fall isn’t just another mere “release” or record from spoiled kids discovering metal and crying about how difficult life is in the suburbs. Axe To Fall is a nearly two-decade culmination of hard roads travelled and unwanted, but necessary, lessons learned, of prayers for salvation lost to the wind and too-fleeting nights where everything was still, if only for a moment, consumed by morning’s inevitable advance, of crushing defeats and the realization that the war only ends when we do, and it’s not one we can win, merely endure.

Once again recorded by Converge’s resident engineering genius Kurt Ballou, whose God City Recording Studios has become the Mecca for aggressive music’s elite to congregate at for assistance realizing their sonic sermons (from Trap Them and Genghis Tron to Torche and Buried Inside), Axe To Fall is as sonically dense a tapestry and punishing a release as Converge have ever conceived, once again perfectly echoing musically Bannon’s heart-ripped-out-of-chest-but-still-beating lyrics. It’s the summation of experiences learned working on records such as No Heroes and You Fail Me, also recorded by Ballou at God City, and it surpasses them.

But even while Converge and Axe To Fall stand alone — as Bannon is so fond of saying live: “we’re born into this world alone, and we die alone, so make your mark while you’re here” — they’ve never forgotten the core values of the hardcore scene they were raised in, and raised others on: community. Axe To Fall is Converge’s most collaborative effort to date, even while paradoxically sounding as focused as ever. Axe To Fall features the likes of John Pettibone (Undertow, Himsa), Ulf Cederlund (Entombed, Disfear), Cave In’s Steve Brodsky, Adam McGrath and J.R. Connors, F. Sean Martin (Hatebreed), George Hirsch (Blacklisted) and Genghis Tron’s Mookie Singerman, Hamilton Jordan and Michael Sochynsky, amongst others, contributing to its dense sonic soundscapes. Even Steve Von Till (of legendary star destroyers Neurosis) graces the record on “Cruel Bloom,” an ignoring of musical confines that sounds akin to something Tom Waits and Mr. Bungle might concoct if trapped in a watering hole on the fringes of Purgatory right before the end-time hit.

Something Bannon said to me years ago during our very first interview has stuck with me ever since: that hardcore needs to be about something more than bad poetry and Slayer riffs. And that search for and desire to be something more have defined Converge since their inception, and continue to propel them and their art ever-forward. Through sheer hard work, perseverance and an unwavering commitment to artistic integrity Converge have risen from humble beginnings to become that mercurial and so very rare “something more.” Axe To Fall continues their reign, long may it last.
