Planet B "Fiction Prediction"

LP - $17.50
STREET DATE: 2/9/24
CAT#: 31G140
LABEL: Three One G

Planet B's second LP has been a long time in the making: four years, to be specific. Obviously, over this span of time, there has been an almost unimaginable amount of surreality and insanity to pull from when creating the band's unique hip-hop-punk-meets-sci-fi-horror-movie sonic aesthetic. As always, the sound is as confrontational as it is catchy, the lyrics scathing and the beats bizarre. Earworms abound. As with the band's first release, there are a host of guest collaborations on the various tracks, from Josie Cotton to David Scott Stone (ex-LCD Soundsystem, Melvins), D-Styles (Invisibl Skratch Piklz), and more. Perhaps most personally meaningful are the instrumental contributions from Gabe Serbian (The Locust) and Eric Livingston (Mamaleek), both family to the band, who have each passed on from this dimension and back to whatever radical planet they came from since the creation of the album.

TRACK LISTING:

  1. Dick On the Dance Floor
  2. Clogged Sync (feat. Eric Livingston and Ethan Campa)
  3. The Baader Review (feat. Crow Jane)
  4. The Bouquet (feat. D-Styles)
  5. Terrible Purpose (feat. Ric Scales)
  6. Horror Movie Called Civilization (feat. Tommy Meehan)
  7. Filthy Suitcase
  8. Goals Gone Wild (feat. Tommy Meehan)
  9. Rack More Brains (feat. Kent Osborne)
  10. Unreal Estate (feat. Dave Scott Stone)
  11. Let Me Explain This Again (feat. Josie Cotton and Gabe Serbian)

Transit Method "Othervoid"

LP - $17.25 / CD - $8.00 / CASSETTE - $7.50
LP UPC: 197190290646
STREET DATE: 2/2/24
CAT#: BPR-93
LABEL: Brutal Panda

Othervoid marks the prog-metal quartet's most bludgeoning, infectious and ambitious album to date. The result of years of internal turmoil and triumph... Transit Method charged into the eye of the storm and emerged on the other side with a fresh lineup and the strongest album of their career. The path was challenging, unpredictable and exhilarating - just like the album itself.

Othervoid's seven tracks show the breadth of the band's songwriting. The punk-metal riffs and dueling guitars of "Psychometry" evoke Mutoid Man and Iron Maiden, while the vocal harmonies and trad-metal gallop of "The Outside" recall Mastodon and Thin Lizzy. The album reaches its astonishing climax on "Frostbite," a shapeshifting, nine-minute epic inspired by the 2021 freeze that left millions of Texans stranded at home without power and claimed hundreds of lives.

The album was produced by Charles Godrey at Scary American Studios in Austin, TX (Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Third Eye Blind, Whiskey Myers, Holy Wave), mastered by Dan Shike at Tone and Volume Mastering (Meat Puppets, Third Eye Blind, Larkin Poe) and features incredible album art from Marald van Haasteren (Metallica, Kvelertak, Gost).

TRACK LISTING:

Nonexistent Night “In the Middle of a Boiling Sea”

LP - $17.40
STREET DATE: 1/26/24
CAT#: 31G138
LABEL: Three One G

"While there was a sparse beauty to the solo piano recording, this fleshed-out composition is even better (if better means ‘more full of darkness and dread’). The added instrumentation folds in a welcome curiosity and complexity to this tune."
– KPBS

Carrie Feller (who creates gloom-synth earworms under the moniker Hexa), Sal Gallegos and John Rieder (of the instrumental noise-rock duo Secret Fun Club) first began working together in mid-2019. The odd, left-field idea was a cover of “I Was a Teenage Werewolf” by The Cramps, which was eventually featured on the compilation Really Bad Music for Really Bad People (Three One G, 2020). This unlikely-but-in-retrospect-perfectly-sensible collaboration continued on in spring 2021, when Carrie recruited Sal and John as the rhythm section for a new instrumental composition. The result was “Prelude in Terror,” a sonic partnership so thrilling and intuitive that a full project as a trio seemed like the only rational next step. Nonexistent Night formed soon after, and the three musicians began writing the songs that would become the new LP In The Middle of A Boiling Sea over the subsequent 12 months. The band made its live debut in June 2022 and then, with the blessing and support of the label Three One G, began production of their record throughout late 2022 and early 2023. The band recently added Alia Jyawook (Scary Pierre, ex-Hot Nerds) as permanent cellist and guitarist and are already working on new songs for a follow-up record. Influenced by bands like Three Mile Pilot, Rachel’s, Slint, Chelsea Wolfe, King Woman, Kate Bush, June of 44, PJ Harvey, Nick Cave, Om, Low, Converge, and Tristeza, Nonexistent Night is elegiac, dramatic, and tinged with dread: post-rock for a drowning world.

This album was recorded by Dale Holland and Sal Gallegos. Mixed by Dale Holland and mastered by Nathan Joyner. It will be released by Three One G on blue smoke color vinyl

Touché Amoré "Is Survived By: Revived"

LP - $17.25
LP UPC: 791689665795
STREET DATE: 1/19/24
CAT#: DW252
LABEL: Deathwish Inc.

It's not hyperbole to state that Touché Amoré's third album Is Survived By is the band's most pivotal album. Released 10 years ago on September 24th, 2013 via Deathwish Inc., Is Survived By tackles the complicated nature of leaving a lasting legacy and the uncertainty that surrounds that; ultimately resulting in a record about learning to find the validation and love within one's self. Produced by the legendary Brad Wood (Sunny Day Real Estate, Liz Phair, mewithoutYou), the recording sessions were a lesson in growth for the Los Angeles quintet - vocalist Jeremy Bolm, guitarists Nick Steinhardt and Clayton Stevens, bassist Tyler Kirby, and drummer Elliot Babin - as the band transformed from a group of individuals who play hardcore songs to the established headlining act that Touché Amoré is today.

Is Survived By received critical acclaim from the likes of Pitchfork, The A.V. Club, The Needle Drop, and more - resulting in the album being 13th highest rated album of 2013 per Metacritic. It was also the band's first record to chart on the U.S. Billboard 200, peaking at 85. But most importantly, Is Survived By is beloved by fans new and old. "When the reviews started to come out for it - for example, Pitchfork was really kind about it - I was shocked," explains Bolm. "I really didn't know how well we did. And then when it suddenly had such a positive response, I can't explain how taken aback I was."

For the past decade it's been bittersweet as the band has felt less than satisfied with the record's sound - a result of the band's overthinking and underpreparedness.

So a 10 year anniversary felt like the perfect time to tap Wood and Emily Lazar (the same team behind Stage Four) to remix and remaster Is Survived By. "I've always had a really hard time with the way this record sounds," explains Bolm. "I've unfortunately been oversharing and vocal about that for a number of years, but when we went to Brad to remix it, the main direction that I gave him was to make this sound more like Stage Four, and I think he killed it. He found that middle ground to where everything now compliments each other and there's far more clarity overall."

No longer does Is Survived By feel claustrophobic as if each layer of sound is fighting one another. Instead, Bolm's signature vocals flow in unison with Stevens and Steinhardt's creative, thoughtful guitar work, while the stellar rhythm section of Kirby and Babin provide a fervent punch to each song. Side A favorites like "Just Exist" and "DNA" hit with a new intensity, while the lusciousness within "Harbor" feels more defined. The Side B tracks may benefit the most - the Interpol influence shines throughout "Kerosene", and the slow burn build on "Non Fiction" is heard with more definition than ever before. There is a new found sense of brightness throughout the album's twelve tracks without losing any of the character from the original recordings. The lessons Bolm has learned over the years were also applied to the remaster. "I do feel a lot better about it," he says. "Everything kicks and everything pumps on this remix and remaster and I feel like 'Wow.' I almost feel like I'm hearing these songs for the first time again."

It wouldn't be an official Touché Amoré project without elaborate and immersive packaging courtesy of guitarist Nick Steinhardt. The now iconic artwork of the band standing in the shadow of the Los Angeles skyline is vibrant as ever, with 5 expanded colorways featuring a different essay about the album from each band member + a new "wildfire" orange with liner notes containing references to that era. Essays from Balance and Composure's Jon Simmons, Drug Church and Self Defense Family's Patrick Kindlon, producer Brad Wood, and more. Touché Amoré always give the full 100% to the visual medium as it does to the music, and this 10th anniversary reissue is no different.

Is Survived By is a cathartic record about wanting to be heard and understood and how you'll be remembered. A perfect snapshot of understanding your past and looking towards the future. It's why this record remains incredibly cherished by so many listeners, achieving that legacy it set out for a decade ago. "When I hear people say that this is their favorite record, it honestly makes me feel really, really good because it reminds me that my ears are different from the listeners," Bolm reveals. "That's important to remember. So to have something that you have felt down about, be praised, I mean, you can't ask for anything better."

Infant Island "Obsidian Wreath"

LP - $17.25 / CD - $8.75
LP UPC: 791689665900
CASSETTE UPC: 791689666198
STREET DATE: 1/12/24
CAT#: SV25
LABEL: Secret Voice

Fury in mourning. This is the emotional world in which Infant Island's third album, Obsidian Wreath, wraps itself and its listener. It is an album about trudging through the end of the world: where climate catastrophe, the acceleration of capitalist extractive exploitation, the apathy towards social health which has emerged from the pandemic, and an endless stream of ongoing crises too numerable to be named, constantly haunt the edges of our vision, like a rot that sets in on the borders of being. Obsidian Wreath is an album about the hopelessness of the slow violent decay of the world, about reckoning with a totalizing, impossible condition of reality which never stops confronting you with the question: how do we continue?

This is the question which Infant Island contends with throughout this record, a question they meet with fervor, with ferocity, with a determination and clarity marked -- sustained, even -- by grief. Lyrically, musically, the album shifts between light and darkness, using such tropes and their accompanying affects not in their cliché forms as opposing forces, but as mutually determined states of being which implicate and deterritorialize the Other. There must be something beautiful that can emerge from something terrible -- this kind of impossible hope, an optimism that only emerges only from the condition of absolute pessimism, guides the album's thematic considerations. Perhaps this impossible faith has something to do with Obsidian Wreath being a pandemic record -- written in 2020 but releasing in 2024, the record's slow birth reflects a force of will which was required to survive a global event which threatened the music industry and the people in it at every level.

This contradictory pessimistic optimism is realized as well in Infant Island's singular songwriting, which filters Virginia screamo through the melancholic furor of American Black Metal acts like Panopticon and Deafheaven. Obsidian Wreath continues and advances the band's masterful weaving of heavy genres, combining screamo and black metal with a deft movement between the sweeping emotionality of shoegazing post-metal, the hard-hitting grooviness of new-school grindcore, and the searing feedback of noise rock. Each composition flows seamlessly into the next, making this fluidity of sound feel not like an oscillation between styles, but instead like the tracing of the contours of a scene, as though Infant Island are tracing their own artistic singularity through the historicity and creative multiplicity of American extreme metal. One cannot shake the feeling that this is music born from a desire for community -- where we are accompanied through this world not only by our friends and family but by the ghosts, the historical presences we feel but remain forever out of sight, that we unwittingly follow every day. Produced again by Virginia legend Matthew Michel (Majority Rule, Nø Man); with guest spots from Harper Boyhtari and Logan Gaval (Greet Death) on "Kindling," Andrew Schwartz (.gif from god) on "Another Cycle"; and with contributions from members of Undeath, King Yosef, For Your Health, Senza, Malevich, Mikau, and more -- one can't help but feel that sense of community. Infant Island invites you into a scene, welcoming despite all its aesthetic harshness.

In this way, Obsidian Wreath is the kind of heavy music that would feel most proper to hear shuddering through the red clay bricks of rural Virginia, its place of birth. It is music that carries in its melodic intensity the materiality and contradictions of its Southern home, so geographically near, yet so culturally and economically far from the centers of American hegemonic power. The album art, from Virginian folk artist Sarah Bachman, captures this social rootedness, contrasting the ethereality of an Appalachian night with the chaotic obliterating power of a wildfire. Silhouetted figures, between ash and shadow, are imprinted on the ground, absently present, ghosts which cling to the land and to each other. Bachman's art expertly captures the political and emotional stakes of Infant Island's songwriting: a refusal to let go of this world.

Obsidian Wreath is the culmination of Infant Island's entire discography, synthesized into one LP and turned up to 11. As begun with 2020's Beneath and Sepulcher, four years later it continues the band's artistic direction to darker, harsher moods and sounds while also putting them in contrast with their most delicate and experimental Infant Island arrangements to date. It is a relentless, furious, and ever-shifting composition which coheres around expert composition and a single-minded interrogation of how we can possibly continue living in the state of this planet. In "Veil" at the midpoint of the record, all members of Infant Island, as well as many guests, chant together in unison to insist that "this world is enough." Standing in community, Infant Island insists not that the conditions of the world in which we live are adequate. No, they insist that this world contains within it already what is needed to transform it into something better and freer, something which will sustain the lives we cling to.

Angel Hair "Insect Immortality"

LP - $17.25
LP UPC: 783495323099
STREET DATE: 1/12/24
CAT#: 31G137
LABEL: Three One G

Angel Hair began in late 1992 in Boulder, Colorado, and as PunkNews.org described them: "Angel Hair was a five-piece from Colorado whose music would grow to be associated with the chaotic, inventive San Diego scene of the early nineties. Bands such as Heroin, Antioch Arrow, Swing Kids, Clikitat Ikatowi and Mohinder are good reference points, but Angel Hair had a unique intensity that not even their West Coast peers could match." After many changes the lineup solidified in early 1994, issuing a split 7" EP with Bare Minimum on Titanic Records, and touring the west coast. The lineup included guitarists Andy Arahood (Red Sparowes) and Josh Hughes (The VSS, Pleasure Forever, Rabbits, SSOLD), bassist Todd Corbett (Stiffwhiff), drummer Paul Iannacito (Generalissimo), and vocalist Sonny Kay (The VSS, Year Future, Gold Standard Labs). During that tour, they recorded the 4-song Gravity EP with Matt Anderson in Chula Vista, which was released in time for a six week summer tour around the US in 1994. In that time they also released a split EP with The Fisticuffs Bluff on Unleaded Records. In the fall of '94, they traveled to San Diego again to record the "Insect Mortality" 12" which was released on Gravity in May 1995, four months after Angel Hair had broken up. Drummer Paul Iannacito moved away abruptly following a west coast tour over Christmas, and the band, feeling he was irreplaceable, called it quits after a little more than two years. During this time, they toured with peers such as Monsula, Clikatat Ikatowi, Spitboy, Garden Variety, J Church, Bare Minimum, Antioch Arrow, the Yah Mos, the Fucking Angels and the Vicious Ginks.

The band explains of the release: "'Insect Immortality' combines nearly all our previous releases, certainly all the ones worth hearing. Most, however, were recorded by Gravity's Matt Anderson in San Diego in a variety of DIY spaces and setups, none of which would qualify as a studio per se. They were recorded quickly, mixed immediately, and often available on tour less than 2 months later. It was an incredible time in our lives and those recordings really do capture the energy and momentum of what we were creating. But three decades later, after our ears and minds have evolved along with technology, it became evident at some point that all the music we released could be made to sound much better. Thanks to Matt's foresight and diligence, obtaining the original masters wasn't difficult. We handed them over to Pete Lyman, a giant in the mastering world, and our old chum from Boulder, present at the first and last Angel Hair shows and many in between. Pete remixed the tracks from our 12" and most of the EP's from the ground up, and the difference is huge. These songs have never sounded so intense and everyone in the band is very well represented."

"Angel Hair's music has a certain unforgettable quality that places it in the canon of hardcore classics... A vicious, surreal and surprisingly exhilarating maelstrom of San Diego-styled hardcore, and it is certainly one of best (bands) Gravity has put out. This diamond in the rough is highly, highly recommended for fans of chaotic hardcore." --PunkNews.org

The debut 12" from London, UK based crust/hardcore band WREATHE. Recommended for fans of early Tragedy, Ekkaia, and From Ashes Rise.

Much like the Watership Down inspiration for their previous band Fall of Efrafa, the concept, lyrics and artwork for WREATHE are based on 'The Book Of Venym; An Egalitarian Demonology'. LABEL: Persistent Vision

America can be a cold and callous place. As vast as it is cruel, the modern living experience is often defined by isolation. Pushing back against the doldrums and reaching for community, Massa Nera and Quiet Fear release the collaborative album, "Quatro Vientos // Cinco Soles."

New Jersey's Massa Nera and Los Angeles' Quiet Fear draw from their lived experiences to push the borders of introspective, impassioned hardcore and screamo. Together, the bands create a unique sonic world for "Quatro Vientos // Cinco Soles" in which the listener can become fully immersed.

Meant as a cohesive piece of art, Massa Nera and Quiet Fear worked to highlight rhythm and other non-traditional elements of hardcore without forgoing aggression. The bands take 90s-inspired screamo as their foundation and update the style for a modern audience, weaving elements of post rock, mathcore, and even Latin rhythms into their sound.

Balancing vulnerability and fragility with moments of extreme emotional catharsis, the bands play with genres and dynamics to add weight and push the genre forward. Massa Nera and Quiet Fear effortlessly tie together the metallic chaos of Converge, Envy's most triumphant moments, and the emotional intensity of Pg.99, while creating something new and refreshing of their own.

Frankie & The Deadbeats "The Possibility That Love Is Not Enough"

The Bakersfield sound of twangy guitars. The pedal steel. The heavy drawl. The common signifiers of America's country and western music are steeped in tradition and culled from the landscape, but there is also something rich and universal in those sounds, something that transcends borders. The timbres tie the sound to a place, but the real virtues in country music come from the storytelling, the approachable melodies, and the personal stamp on the well-honed template. On their debut album, The Shining, the Czech ensemble Frankie & the Deadbeats deftly paid homage to the sound of the American west while imbuing their music with Slavic fatalism and punk irreverence. The album garnered enough stateside attention for frontman Frankie Knuth to tour the eastern seaboard of the US with American songwriter Matt Charette, and with every live performance the Frankie & the Deadbeats have further refined their sound. On their new sophomore album, The Possibility That Love Is Not Enough, Frankie & the Deadbeats continue to explore the varied terrain of country music, tackling riotous two-steps, forlorn ballads, and rowdy anthems with the expertise of seasoned traveling troubadours.

The album cover for The Possibility That Love Is Not Enough shows the Czech band decked out in Nudie suits in a high desert landscape with a flying saucer looming overhead. Is it a statement on their inherent alien-ness in the American landscape? Is it an affirmation of their reverence for the music and acknowledgment of the absurdity in Bohemian punks tackling an often-xenophobic artform? Is this country music with a fantastical cosmic element? Whatever the motivation, Frankie & the Deadbeats have faithfully crafted a collection of songs steeped in tradition while adding their own forward-thinking radiant outsider flair. Songs like "On The Road Again, Again" acknowledge their lineage to American country classics while forging a link between yesteryear outlaws and modern touring nomads. Similarly, tracks like "On The Other Side" employ classic country timbres while making melodic nods to The Church's post-punk hit "Under the Milky Way."

We live in the era of globalization. Everywhere is both familiar and foreign. Like tumbleweeds, we drift from place to place, never laying down roots. That restless roaming spirit permeates across The Possibility That Love Is Not Enough, whether it takes shape in the homesick acoustic ballad "All My Heroes," the down-and-out wanderlust of "Flowers," or the defiant exit of the Townes Van Zandt cover "Nothin'." If we are all untethered from our lineage, unbound by geography, and sifting through the ashes of culture in a rapidly evolving world, why not stake a claim on the sound of a specific time and place and build a foundation on that bedrock? This is exactly what Frankie & the Deadbeats are doing on The Possibility That Love Is Not Enough--taking advantage of a comforting sound of the past and juxtaposing it against the tumult of our current age. Call it kitsch, call it camp, but the universal yearning and undeniable melodies of these songs speak an eternal truth. Saddle up and enjoy the ride.

  1. Let Her Go, Boys!
  2. Until the Sun Touches My Face

Stress Positions "Harsh Reality"

LP - $17.25
STREET DATE: 12/8/23
CAT#: 31G136
LABEL: Three One G

Stress Positions is a band from Chicago, IL. The band is made up of three members from the now-defunct C.H.E.W. (Drummer Jonathan Giralt, guitarist Benyamin Rudolph, and bassist Russell Harrison) with new vocalist Stephanie Brooks. The band formed in 2020 during the Covid pandemic and plays forward-looking classic American hardcore punk. A new EP on Iron Lung records is due in September, as is an LP from Three One G. This is jungle D-Beats for clapping cheeks. Expect the unexpected in the kingdom of madness.

Harsh Reality was recorded by Seth Engel (Floatie, C.H.E.W, Nnamdi, Ratboys ), mixed by Matt Russell (Big Laugh, Oozing Wound, Rezen), and mastered by James Plotkin (Botch, Voivod, Cave In).

"Stress Positions barrel through most of these songs at such blistering speeds that they almost become airborne, leaving scorch marks on the ground. Giralt's dense, thundering drumming ignites the band's riffs and gives them their core character--they're relentless and frantic, though they can jump from pulverizing to swinging like flicking a light switch. Stress Positions are as loud as you'd expect--Rudolph's seesawing guitars alone can fill a room--but Brooks's voice is somehow even louder, so that her sharp holler punctures the avalanche of noise like a giant spike." --Chicago Reader

"...there's so much detail and nuance immediately found in the songwriting, creating tension and resolve, only to bludgeon it all into obscurity. This is not caveman hardcore, Stress Positions play with a sense of brilliance and a earthquaking dexterity. C.H.E.W. may be no more, but long live Stress Positions, perhaps your new favorite hardcore band."--Post-Trash

"...hardcore with lots of fun surprises thrown in… Vocalist Stephanie Brooks has a brutal vocal delivery that oscillates between shredding and shrieking, only slowing down to softer singing on an occasion or two… highly recommended."--Maximum RocknRoll

Full of Hell and Nothing "When No Birds Sang"

LP - $17.50 / CD - $7.00
LP UPC: 197189771071
CD UPC: 197189886133
STREET DATE: 12/1/23
CAT#: CLCR126
LABEL: Closed Casket Activities

Like wolves of the same pack separated at birth, outliers instinctually recognize one another. After twisting and turning through the underground on parallel trajectories, the separate paths of Full of Hell and Nothing collide on the collaborative LP, When No Birds Sang (out December 1st on Closed Casket Activities).

At this meeting point, Full of Hell—Dylan Walker [vocals], Spencer Hazard [guitar], Dave Bland [drums], and Sam DiGristine [bass]—and Nothing’s Domenic “Nicky” Palermo [vocals, guitar] and Doyle Martin [vocals, guitar] burst out of genre confines together with a sound that’s equally dangerous and dynamic.

“Both Full of Hell and Nothing deal with the same genre-phobia,” laughs Nicky. “We’ve been called any style you can think of, but we’re both simply intent on making soul crushers.” “We’re beyond limiting ourselves to a genre,” agrees Dylan. “There aren’t any rules, but there’s clearly an identity. No matter what Nothing does, I can tell it’s them. We’re meeting in the middle where it’s lush and beautiful, but also sad and ugly if you look closely at it. Out of mutual respect, we just decided to go for it.”

Nothing and Full of Hell initially crossed paths in the twenty-tens, sharing the bills of shows and festivals intermittently. Dylan and Nicky kept in touch over the years, and the collaboration naturally followed. Together, they built a new “wall of sound” in the middle out of Full of Hell’s abstract and harsh ambience and Nothing’s searing shoegaze tendencies—conjuring extreme peaks and valleys inspired by the likes of My Bloody Valentine and latter day Swans.

“We’ve never done anything like this,” Nicky goes on. “The contrast is huge as we’re putting two extremes together and making them work. We’re just bridging the gap.”

Ambitious in scope and concept, When No Birds Sang not only showcases the bands’ creative highs, but also some of humanity's woeful lows— and they introduce this body of work with “Spend The Grace.” An unnerving melody gives way to cathartic growls atop a sparse beat, and guitars buzz beneath gritty vocals only to spiral out into trudging distorted crescendo. “We put the song together as we went through this experience,” recalls Nicky. “The whole record built itself as it moved.”

"Spend The Grace" arrives today alongside a high-concept, allegorical cinematic feature. Directed by Mike Martinez and Tyler Way, the video is opaque in nature but tells a devastating story. The directors comment, “In our endless quest to navigate the profound intricacies of reality, we often encounter a significant challenge: the limitations of language. However in those decisive moments, when individuals are confronted with the choice of determining their own paths versus succumbing to external influences, a remarkable opportunity can unfold. Within a fleeting instant, liberation can arise and a being can exist in one world while inhaling the essence of another.”

Full Of Hell and Nothing notably wrote When No Birds Sang face-to-face in Ocean City, MD and collaborated in-person as much as possible. Eventually, they entered the studio with GRAMMY® Award-nominated producer Will Putney. The atmosphere contributed to the energy of the record itself.

“I was super happy to be in a room and not just throwing shit back and forth online,” Nicky states. “I have such a hard time when I’m not staring down the barrel of a gun. Being in a room with these guys brought everything into reality.” “It’s way more productive,” Dylan continues. “This was the first time any of us had worked with Will. His resume speaks for itself, and he definitely added a great perspective.” “It’s an emotional record,” adds Dylan. “Once we decided on the concept, we followed a similar approach. We’re bringing you to this edge of an empty void.”

Yet it feels good because it’s undeniably real.

“When you hear it, I hope you feel devastated emotionally,” Dylan leaves off. “If we’re doing our job, it will freak you the f*ck out in the best way, because you’re staring at the precipice of oblivion with us.”

“‘Devastation’ is a good reaction for me,” Nicky concurs. “From top-to-bottom, this record is highly comprehensive and super detailed. For me, the process itself was humbling. Every once in a while— with doing music for the better part of my life —experiences like this sometimes erase the imposter syndrome I feel playing music, and for a moment I forget how big of a loser I am,” he grins.

Racetraitor "Creation and the Timeless Order of Things"

LP - $17.25
LP UPC: 850048184039
STREET DATE: 11/24/23
CAT#: GFM103
LABEL: Good Fight Music

First formed in 1996, the band - Mani Mostofi (vocals), Dan Binaei (guitar), Andrea Black (guitar and backing vocals), R. Brent Decker (bass) and Andrew Hurley (drums) - continue to be at the forefront of experimental hardcore, as sonically and politically charged as ever. The 13 songs on Creation and the Timeless Order of Things focus on fighting for liberation from the oppressive systems that destroy humanity and the earth, while creating a geographic autobiography of Racetraitor.

The first single, "Eid," takes the listener to Iran. With singer Mani Mostofi and guitarist Dan Binaei both being the children of Iranian immigrants, "Eid" represents the band digging into their family stories after the 1979 Revolution. The track stretches the band's sound by blending their trademark metallic fury with heavy Persian classical music, contributed by renowned Persian classical musician, Fared Shafinury, as well as a guest feature from UK-Iranian vocalist, Patrick Hassan (xRepentancex). Making the video for "Eid" was a risky experience, as the cinematographer shot footage within public spaces of Iran, an act that could be criminalized in the country. The result is a blend of Iranian culture and history mixed with striking live performance shots, and can be watched HERE.

With the album originally set to be completed in 2020, as the for-profit medical infrastructure failed to protect the populations of earth, the band like many others, didn't finish the record as planned. Instead, this inspired Racetraitor to look at what they wanted to achieve sonically in a new light, creating a sound that is heavier, more psychedelic, and more worldly all at once. The band also took this time to have friends record additional vocals on the album, including contributions from Dennis Lyxzen (Refused), Tim Kinsella (Joan of Arc, Cap'n Jazz), Stan Liszewaki (Terminal Nation), and Sanket Lama (Chepang) to name a few, plus Ethan Lee McCarthy (Primitive Man) contributing a noise track.

The record addresses specific places, events, visions, and people, that all tie to the band members histories. As Mani expands:

"In the past people seemed more interested in our story as a band than the themes we sing about. So I tried to create an album that bridges that. What have we seen and experienced that makes us the people and band we are. Places that our families are from, places that we have lived or worked. And through these geographies we address all sorts of socio-political issues from exploitation of migrant workers to domestic violence to indigenous rights. The end result is a much more personal record."

  1. Eid
  2. Chamelecón
  3. Cave of the Patriarchs
