The Sun's Journey Through The Night "Worldless"

LP - $19.40 / CD - $10.70 / Cassette - $10.70
STREET DATE: 7/28/23
CAT#: CRR201
LABEL: Church Road

The Sun's Journey Through The Night is the creation of its masked frontman, whose true identity has always been obscured and hidden. Names have come and gone, but the moniker that has been most consistent for the dark figure behind the project is "No One".

No One has spent four years crafting his signature style of chaotic and cathartic black metal. With themes that see deep personal trauma translated into narratives that explore creation, death, the universe and life beyond humanity.

With three albums behind him, each reaching a larger audience than the last, No One began assembling a live version of the band, in order to take his comic black metal from the solitary world of one-man black metal, to the live stage. The visceral energy of this live version of the project led to live musicians Lune, Deimos and Nereid joining the band to help write the monolithic new album "Wordless".

THIEV "Break/Fade"

LP - $13.35
STREET DATE: 7/28/23
CAT#: PRO-086
LABEL: Protagnoist Music

Something infectious and energetic was woven through the songs of 90's melodic punk, and THIEV are tapping directly into that vein again today. With influences such as Bad Religion, AFI, Lifetime, Pennywise, and Saves the Day, their approach is to play sincere melodic hardcore with a heavy west coast influence while sticking to their NJ pop-punk/hardcore roots. Those who yearn for the catchy hooks, tasty riffs, and anthemic choruses of yesteryear will find a veritable feast of such attributes on this vinyl release which contains both EP's. And alongside the formative elements of past influence, these tracks definitely find a firm anchor in the authenticity of the present with their conscious lyrics and emotively mature songwriting. Featuring members of bands such as Hundreds of AU, Silence Equals Death, Entropy, Lesser Minds, and more, the seasoned players in THIEV are hailing a resurgence of high-energy punk rock with a long memory and a keen eye to the future. Let's go!

Converge "Axe To Fall"

LP - $17.25
LP UPC:723314784359
STREET DATE: 7/21/23
CAT#: DW98
LABEL: Epitaph / Deathwish Inc.

It never ceases to amaze me how the things we initially dismiss, overlook, don’t notice can become the most important and meaningful to us and our lives.

The first time I saw Converge was in 1996 with Deadguy, Coalesce and a number of other bands whose names are now lost to memory in a Legion Hall in a rundown part of Buffalo, NY. I’d like to say they changed my life that night but they didn’t — not that night, anyway. However, there was something about the way their rail-thin singer (Jacob Bannon) threw himself without regard into his performance, and the audience, and glimpses of the more than then-typical Victory Records mosh in their music that spoke of things to come. If you told me that band (Converge, I would discover later while buying Deadguy merch) would become one of the most important to not only myself but to aggressive music and its various scenes and factions, I would have cracked a smile, at the very least. Funny, how things turn out.

Formed in the winter of 1990 in Boston, MA, during the rise and subsequent fall of the legendary Boston hardcore scene, Converge are unarguably one of the most important bands in the history of aggressive music. Through numerous line-up changes (the band are currently comprised of vocalist/visual design terrorist Jacob Bannon, drummer Ben Koller, guitarist/back-up vocalist Kurt Ballou and bassist/back-up vocalist Nate Newton), musical trends (mosh, tech, guys crying and wearing make-up, ’80s thrash revival) and the coming and going of more “the next great thing” than I care to recall, Converge have established themselves as leaders in the aggressive music underground.

It seems redundant to use the word “landmark” when discussing their musical canon, as almost every album is genre-defining, but Converge’s run is unparalleled. Releases such as Petitioning the Empty Sky (1997), When Forever Comes Crashing (1998), Jane Doe (2001), You Fail Me (2004) and No Heroes (2006) have established Converge as trendsetters and innovators, setting new standards in hardcore and metal with each release. These records have evolved the band (from their thrash-inspired, hardcore-drenched beginnings to slower, more ominous and atmospheric work to all-out Tsunami-of-hostility hell-bent on levelling creation) and produced new waves of followers and emulators with each successive work. Honestly, has there been a band more influential on past and present “successful” metal/hardcore acts as unaccredited? It’s true: integrity has its price.

After nearly 20 years, such a glorious run of releases and a live show that’s gone from flailing kids flailing against kids to legendary exorcism for both band and audience — watch the pit during “The Saddest Day” and tell me it’s not the closest thing to a near-religious experience atheists will ever have — Converge could be forgiven for releasing an endeavour that was simply good, okay, just maintaining their status quo. After all, it’s much easier to win the title than retain it, and even the greats slip from time to time. Axe To Fall (Converge’s third release for indie institution Epitaph Records), however, is no such relapse.

True to themselves and their art, as always, no matter the cost, Axe To Fall continues to push relentlessly forward, much like a shark that needs to always keep swimming to survive. Where No Heroes was a refinement and broadening of hostilities declared on previous assaults such as Jane Doe, Axe To Fall returns to the more AmRep-inspired noisecore abrasions of You Fail Me while also updating and making vital the thrash influences that defined earlier Converge efforts (Caring and Killing, Petitioning the Empty Sky) and retaining the hardcore hostilities and frantic pace so vital to their foundation. Of course, the experimental anguish and pleading for salvation are no mere sharpening of past knives but yet another leap forward in an existence full of them.

From frenetic, frantic opening track “Dark Horse,” which is a downhill avalanche of ferocity culminating in one of the heaviest riffs Converge have ever laid listeners to waste with, to “Worms Will Feed,” an ominous exploration that ebbs and flows, building upon crashing then retreating waves of music and lyrical condemnations (“the worms will find a way, the rats will find a way”), to the barely restrained chaos of “Losing Battle” and Axe To Fall’s sanguine, beautiful, climatic seven-minute-plus dénouement, “Wretched Word,” Axe To Fall isn’t just another mere “release” or record from spoiled kids discovering metal and crying about how difficult life is in the suburbs. Axe To Fall is a nearly two-decade culmination of hard roads travelled and unwanted, but necessary, lessons learned, of prayers for salvation lost to the wind and too-fleeting nights where everything was still, if only for a moment, consumed by morning’s inevitable advance, of crushing defeats and the realization that the war only ends when we do, and it’s not one we can win, merely endure.

Once again recorded by Converge’s resident engineering genius Kurt Ballou, whose God City Recording Studios has become the Mecca for aggressive music’s elite to congregate at for assistance realizing their sonic sermons (from Trap Them and Genghis Tron to Torche and Buried Inside), Axe To Fall is as sonically dense a tapestry and punishing a release as Converge have ever conceived, once again perfectly echoing musically Bannon’s heart-ripped-out-of-chest-but-still-beating lyrics. It’s the summation of experiences learned working on records such as No Heroes and You Fail Me, also recorded by Ballou at God City, and it surpasses them.

But even while Converge and Axe To Fall stand alone — as Bannon is so fond of saying live: “we’re born into this world alone, and we die alone, so make your mark while you’re here” — they’ve never forgotten the core values of the hardcore scene they were raised in, and raised others on: community. Axe To Fall is Converge’s most collaborative effort to date, even while paradoxically sounding as focused as ever. Axe To Fall features the likes of John Pettibone (Undertow, Himsa), Ulf Cederlund (Entombed, Disfear), Cave In’s Steve Brodsky, Adam McGrath and J.R. Connors, F. Sean Martin (Hatebreed), George Hirsch (Blacklisted) and Genghis Tron’s Mookie Singerman, Hamilton Jordan and Michael Sochynsky, amongst others, contributing to its dense sonic soundscapes. Even Steve Von Till (of legendary star destroyers Neurosis) graces the record on “Cruel Bloom,” an ignoring of musical confines that sounds akin to something Tom Waits and Mr. Bungle might concoct if trapped in a watering hole on the fringes of Purgatory right before the end-time hit.

Something Bannon said to me years ago during our very first interview has stuck with me ever since: that hardcore needs to be about something more than bad poetry and Slayer riffs. And that search for and desire to be something more have defined Converge since their inception, and continue to propel them and their art ever-forward. Through sheer hard work, perseverance and an unwavering commitment to artistic integrity Converge have risen from humble beginnings to become that mercurial and so very rare “something more.” Axe To Fall continues their reign, long may it last.

Greet Death "New Hell"

LP - $17.25
LP UPC: 791689665450
STREET DATE: 6/30/23
CAT#: DW216
LABEL: Deathwish Inc.

Greet Death is a three piece post-rock band from Flint, Michigan. They initially made waves with their infectious debut album "Dixieland" (Flesh and Bone, 2017). The album was well received, with Pitchfork giving it a "7.7" rating and stating "...This is a remarkably tuneful, forthright pop-rock band that just so happens to play six-minute songs at bradycardic tempos".

"New Hell" is the latest album from Greet Death. It was recorded by Nick Diener (The Swellers) at Oneder Studios. Additional recording was done by Jake Morse. It was all mastered by Jay Maas at Getaway Recording, and artwork for the release was created by illustrator Liam Rush.

The album as a whole is a creative intermingling of lush melodic atmosphere with melancholic lyrical content. Within that haze their personal subject matter is cleverly cloaked amid beautiful vocal deliveries and dreamy guitar work. This is the case in songs "Circles of Hell", "Do You Feel Nothing", "Let It Die", and "You're Gonna Hate What You've Done". This not-so-subtle vitriol continues to spread through self reflection in unforgettable songs like "Entertainment", "Strange Days", as well as the tone-soaked "Strain". While "Crush" plays as a complex outpouring disguised as a hook-laden pop number. All of this leads to "New Hell", a nearly ten minute epic of towering proportions. Lovingly constructed before ominously swaying in the wind and collapsing under its own emotional weight.

TRACK LISTING:

  1. Circles Of Hell
  2. Do You Feel Nothing?

In 2017, the two-song EP, “Into You” quietly introduced Glare to the world. The EP was recorded by Texas producer, Phillip Odom and independently released as a DIY demo on Bandcamp. Then about a year later, the band joined Sunday Drive Records to put out a new two-song EP, “Void in Blue” on cassette tape.

Since then, the songs have only seen small cassette tape releases, and over time, the songs grew to be staples in Glare’s catalog. To more properly catalog and archive these releases, Glare, and SDR went back to Phillip Odom to remaster all of the songs, and prep them for the first vinyl release.

SSD "How Much Art Can You Take?"

BOOK - $25.65
STREET DATE: 6/16/23
CAT#: RADIO-SSD
LABEL: Radio Raheem

In 2017, I asked Al if I could create an SSD Instagram page because I wanted him to see the impact he and his band had on people from around the world. Since I was not a member of the band, and I wanted to ensure authenticity, I only featured stories and interviews from members of the band and those close to them. Of course, I also highlighted the artistry of Boston photographer PHILIN PHLASH, who was present at so many shows, and who documented the band's trajectory so well. Almost immediately, people began contacting me, telling me how much they loved the stories and photos, and how they'd make a great book. Since Al has always said Phil's work deserved its own platform, I thought a photo essay book would be perfect. Society System Decontrol (SSD) ended as a band in 1985, but the stories, the photographs, and the music live on. As Al has said "We gave it everything we had. We wanted to make an impact. This is how we rock." -- Nancy Barile

"How Much Art Can You Take?" compiles over 170 images, many of which have never been seen before, plus first-hand commentary from the band and their crew, spread across 190 pages in a beautiful 10"x10" hardcover book.

Madison & Floral connect Sign Language to home in Ohio. It represents hope, loss, relationships, love, and uncertainty. Sign Language carefully built their first LP around these themes and emotions. In nine songs, the band drifts between each, approaching them in unique ways.

On 'Crumbling', slower guitars and harmonies lead the song--then on 'Only You' or 'The Nothing', Sign Language lean on their post-hardcore roots, creating the most driving and heaviest songs the band has yet to make.

FLEXI 7"EP - $6.00
STREET DATE: 6/2/23
CAT#: SDR-094

Flacco is the first follow-up single to the self-titled EP, “Money”. Oklahoma rock band return at their best, naturally expanding on the sound established on their release. On Flacco, a more uptempo and rhythmic pattern occurs throughout the single. In contrast to slower vocals and more DIY production on the self-titled, on Flacco, the song is driven, and Money is able to shine even more with cleaner production—boosting the vocals up that are backed with crisper drums and heavy, distorted guitars. Flacco shows a promising evolution and hints at more music and growth in 2023.

S.A.C. is a 4-piece slam/grind outfit from Providence, RI. Drawing their influences from hardcore, death metal, screamo, and hip hop, Shoot All Cops are putting us on notice with 3 tracks of unfettered disgust. Their songs tackle issues such as police brutality, inflated egos, smashing societal standards, and self accountability. The sound is as bleak as the message, dripping with filthy riffs and breakdowns that compliment their scathingly acidic vocals. Turn the volume up and prepare to ram your head directly into the nearest wall.

Don't Sleep "See Change"

LP - $16.60 / CD - $10.70
STREET DATE: 6/2/23
CAT#: EH088
LABEL: End Hits

Whoever said lightning only strikes once clearly has not met Dave Smalley.

From being right in the middle at the birth of US hardcore punk with DYS to creating the blueprint of melodic hardcore with DAG NASTY, from helping to invent pop punk as we know it with ALL to finding himself in the middle of the west coast punk explosion of the 90s with DOWN BY LAW: Smalley was always on the forefront every time hardcore punk pushed its envelope.

While others may use a legacy like that as an excuse to take it a little slower, Dave Smalley has no intention to rest on his laurels and keeps writing new music and releasing records.
When he founded DON'T SLEEP with fellow East Coast punk rockers Garrett Rothman, Tony Bavaria, Jim Bedorf and Tom McGrath in 2017, the world was more than excited about seeing him front a fast yet melodic hardcore band again.

Being motivated by immensely positive feedback, DON'T SLEEP was finally ready to release its debut album "Turn the Tide" in 2020. And then the world came to a grinding halt. But after the dust settled, all five members decided that DON'T SLEEP was too important to not overcome all obstacles thrown in their way.

The five piece went back into the rehearsal room, finished 8 original songs and added an amazing TOM PETTY cover to the mix. The result is DON'T SLEEP's second full length "See Change" and it will see the light of day on Friday June 2nd 2023 worldwide via End Hits Records.

It is a record that combines all elements you have liked about Dave Smalley's music in the past while sounding incredibly contemporary in the here and now.
"DON'T SLEEP is very much a combination of five distinct friends coming together and making a unique sound," Smalley says. "It is a rare thing to have such cool synergy and energy and end up focused like a laser beam. It is powerful, melodic and purposeful. We respect and love the common roots we all grew up in and are coming together to make a sound with that as our foundation, but also looking to the future and growing."

A big assist in making "See Change" sound so fresh and current came from an unlikely pair of producers, the Grammy nominated team of Carson Slovak and Grant McFarland.

Guitarist Tony Bavaria explains the unusual choice:
"While they've worked a lot in the metalcore world (i.e. August Burns Red, Polaris) they've also done some really great sounding rock records for bands like Live, Candlebox, and Everclear. But they are also local hardcore / punk guys we knew for almost twenty years. Knowing how talented they are and the diversity of their work, we really wanted to see what they would be able to bring to the table. It was awesome to have the opportunity to work with them in a world class studio that would probably not be available to a hardcore band like us!"

The end result couldn't be more of a testament to the shared chemistry between band and producers. From the blazing hardcore opener "Harrisburg Graves" to the catchy mid-tempo punk rock of "Promise Made," from the epic chorus of "20/20" to the subtle off beat and reggae leanings of "Love is the suture," there is something here for all Smalley and punk fans, no matter which of his projects you first fell in love with. All the while, the powerful modern production sounds very rooted in the here and now.

Along with the catchiness and amazing musical energy, DON'T SLEEP's "See Change" is also full of lyrical inspiration -- as you would expect from a band fronted by Dave Smalley.

Bassist Garrett elaborates: "I think we've always had the perspective of seeing music and punk/hardcore as a positive force, where the people involved can make a difference in the world around them. It's been reflected in our name and in our album title "See Change." If you see injustice or something that needs to change in your surroundings, make it happen, visualize it, "See Change," know it's possible, and work to make it better."

So, let's just hope that this lightning will strike again and again.

Formed in 2018, Chicago hardcore band Buggin is here to have a good time. Their songs are vibrant, groovy, and real, as demonstrated on their upcoming album, Concrete Cowboys, set for release in Spring 2023 on Flatspot Records. Following the 2021 single "Brainfreeze" and 2020 EP, Buggin Out, it marks their first foray into a full-length record. The album title comes from a cut on the band's 2019 demo and that song sees a rework as does "Poser Bulldozer". Alongside tracks titled "Snack Run" and "The Customer Is Always Wrong," it's clear that Buggin aren't afraid to have a little fun while singing about everyday occurrences.

As the band puts its:
"The album pretty much shows our growth as a band while still sticking true to our roots and why we started everything: having fun with the homies and not taking yourself too seriously. We're not concerned with following any type of trends, just sticking in our own lane."

Between these more playful elements are cathartic moments from vocalist Bryanna Bennett. "Hard 2 Kill" was written as a self-empowerment anthem, while "Not Yours" delves into the tokenization of women and non-binary folks in the hardcore scene. Closer "Youth" finds Bennett's snarling vocals aided by bassist Dewey Hendrik's more surf-punk vocal approach, creating a soundtrack for the younger generation.

The relentless energy Buggin exudes on their recordings, comes across ten-fold in a live setting. Having already shared the stage opening for acts such as Turnstile, 7 Seconds, Show Me The Body, Zulu, and Soul Glo, it's only a matter of time before the band reaches headliner status.

With the release of Concrete Cowboys, Buggin continues to keep there be true to yourself mentality and push towards a bright future in hardcore.

Janaka Stucky "Ascend Ascend: Live in Seattle with Lori Goldston"

2xLP - $21.25
LP UPC: 7795154137114
STREET DATE: 6/23/23
CAT#: NR126
LABEL: Neurot

Praised by Jimmy Page as “riveting,” Janaka Stucky’s book length poem, Ascend Ascend, published by Jack White’s Third Man Books in 2019, gets a mesmerizing treatment on this album by the same name, accompanied by experimental cellist Lori Goldston. Goldston, known for her work with a number of acts—including Nirvana, Cat Power, and Earth—provides otherworldly layers of distortion and natural reverb over Stucky’s dirge-like vocal performance.

Recorded at the All Pilgrims Church in Seattle while Stucky was on a 7-city tour produced by Atlas Obscura in 2019, the performance is served well by the room’s ambiance and was recorded, mixed, and mastered by Mell Dettmer—who has engineered albums for acts such as Earth, Sunn O))), Master Musicians of Bukkake, and Wolves in the Throne Room.

“I wrote Ascend Ascend over the course of 20 days—coming in and out of trance states while secluded in the tower of a 100-year-old church,” Stucky says. In the live performances, Stucky recited the book in its entirety from the confines of a magic circle—drawn with sigils and arcane seals on the floor—ringed with beeswax candles, incense, and live marigolds planted in an outer rim of soil.

“It was important that the performance of the work reflected the space from which it was produced—not just the physical space, but also the interior space,” Stucky says. “I wanted the shows to be initiatory—inviting the audience into my own altered state of consciousness, so the performance could become an invocation, a collective trance, flowering into this fourth dimension.”

Each performance was uniquely tailored to the unusual venues which are the hallmark of Atlas Obscura productions, and Stucky’s musical collaborators changed with each show as well.

“Lori and I had never met before the show, but exchanged several emails in the months leading up to the event,” says Stucky. “We didn’t even do much of a sound check, but Lori was cool and confident—and the performance was magical. With little to no prep, Lori and I tuned into each other and filled the resonant hall of All Pilgrims with the incantation you hear on this record.”

“The recording is very warm and processed in a way that really brings out the best of the room,” says Steve von Till of Neurot Recordings, who is releasing the album. “I have seen a million sound waves, and upon first looking at the waves of Janaka’s voice and Lori's cello I had to do a double take to make sure they weren't the same wave—or that there wasn't tons of bleed between the two—because they look eerily similar. They were so tuned in to each other!”

While on this tour, VICE magazine wrote that, “Janaka Stucky performs poetry readings like he's part fire-and-brimstone preacher, part doom-metal frontman.” Given the record’s aesthetic heritage and execution, which falls somewhere between ambient doom and psychedelic punk mysticism, the synergy with its release on Neurot Recordings feels like a perfect match.

“Janaka Stucky‘s haunting, intense readings are some of the most gripping examples of the form you’re likely to witness.” —Vol.1 Brooklyn

“Janaka Stucky performs poetry readings like he's part fire-and-brimstone preacher, part doom-metal frontman … For him, lighting incense, dropping acid, and creating some of the most ecstatic lines of verse you’ve ever read is just another day at the office.” —VICE

Incendiary “Change The Way You Think About Pain”

LP - $17.25 / CD - $7.00
LP UPC: 197187794652
CD UPC: 197188370329
STREET DATE: 5/26/23
CAT#: CLCR112
LABEL: Closed Casket Activities

Armed with crushing metallic riffs, instantly both fresh and familiar, Incendiary populate each of their four full-length albums with irresistibly energized rhythms and adrenalized urgency. Change The Way You Think About Pain is their leanest and unapologetically meanest yet. The quintet weaned on the Long Island, New York, hardcore scene have more to say than ever. Sharply biting and insightful lyrics sit atop blunt metalcore in a perfect soundtrack to throw a brick through a window.

Incendiary delivers a sound of its own, mixing classic passion and modern power. Frontman Brendan Garrone, guitarists Brian Audley and Rob Nobile, and drummer Dan Lomeli, cite East Coast hardcore heroes like Vision Of Disorder, 108, Indecision and Glassjaw as part of Incendiary’s formative DNA. Less familiar listeners might liken them to a very heavy Rage Against The Machine.

The band returned to Will Putney of Graphic Nature Audio (Knocked Loose, Every Time I Die, Vein.fm) to engineer, mix and master the new release. Many essential genre bands never made a second album, let alone a fourth. “We are kind of in rare territory being a hardcore band on their fourth LP,” Garrone concedes. “It feels like a milestone. By now, you’re either ‘supposed’ to drastically change your sound or have it be the exact same thing as the record before,” he adds. “We didn’t want to do either of those things. Our focus was on refining the sound that we’ve optimally been working towards rather than any desire to make a huge pivot.” Audley says that in addition to the more focused songwriting on Change The Way You Think About Pain, “we also wanted it to be more aggressive and more abrasive, in terms of songs and production. “

Thematically, Incendiary’s fourth album confronts the hyper-polarization of American society, those who confuse selfishness with freedom, and the lengths we’ll go to in order to avoid pain and maintain comfort. The socio-political pulse found throughout Cost of Living remains, with a deeper exploration of the introspective personal lyrics Garrone started to introduce on Thousand Mile Stare. “The album is a mix of both the socio-politically driven content and darker, more personalized subjects. The album title is meant to conjure the concept of pain avoidance,” Garrone explains. “Most of the songs have some kind of tie back to the things everyone does to avoid feeling any semblance of pain. ‘Pain avoidance’ is a phrase me and Brian came across and kept in the back of our minds.”
