Sonagi “Everything Is Longing”

STREET DATE: 8/2/24
CAT#: SV28
LABEL: Secret Voice

Sonagi is the romanization of the Korean word 소나기 which means "sudden rain showers." Sonagi is also the title of Hwang Sung-won's culturally significant 1952 short story of a romance between two young people living in the Post-War and Pre-Industrial Korean countryside. For the Philadelphia quintet who play intense and melancholy screamo earmarked by equal parts crushing passages of dissonance and chord-based harmony, the name is aptly chosen. Sonagi's songs hit like a typhoon, drenching the listener in melody and chaos before ending without fanfare.

After forming in late 2019, Sonagi contributed two songs, "070587 (blue ticket)," and "endless waltz," for The Cold Promise of Uncertainty, a four-way split record through enduring screamo label Middle Man Records. Guitarist/vocalist Harim Jung and lead vocalist Ryann Slauson had met two years prior upon their arrival to the Pennsylvania music hotspot, forging a friendship based on their involvement in DIY, eventually forming Sonagi with drummer Keean Mansour, and completing the lineup in 2022 with guitarist Eric Mauro and bassist Jin Woo Lee. 2022 also saw Sonagi release their debut LP Precedent, on Get Better Records, with a midwest/Canada tour centered around New Friends Fest in Toronto, while they solidified themselves as a staple at home in Philadelphia DIY. Almost the entirety of Sonagi comes with a past project, Slauson with his band Closer, Mauro with The Saddest Landscape and Capacities, Mansour with La Luna and Pique, and Lee with Half/Cross.

Sonagi is prepared to take another step forward with their newest release, Everything Is Longing. Their third effort shows how deep Sonagi's roots in screamo run, with it being their first with Jeremy Bolm's (Touché Amoré) Secret Voice Records and the engineering and mixing handled by Steve Roche (Off Minor) at his Permanent Hearing Damage studio. Everything Is Longing is a refinement of desire, jealousy, lack, shame into the word longing. Everything Is Longing focuses heavily on multiple dimensions of grief and loss and the "impossible task" of trying to heal without logic or closure; as Ryann's dad was lost at sea in 2020; as we collectively lost so many people to a historic, worldwide health emergency; the veils of trust and order and systems of oppression pulled away, or at least somewhat questioned with a louder voice and a better understanding of how they all connect.

Everything Is Longing also digs into what it means to be a trans person, the experience of what you were before, what and who you have known yourself to be, what and who you wish you were, and how to make that true and real. The loss and gain of identity, deciding who to trust with what, the feeling of starting over, trying foolishly to catch up, remembering and forgetting and learning all at the same time - it's very confusing, and expensive, and strange. Within Philadelphia DIY, Sonagi is rooted in solidarity and community building with queer and marginalized people, centering art as connection and inclusion.

LABEL: Neurot

At its heart, music has always been a questioning of inheritance -- a dialogue with predecessors and forebears, the forging of one's own perspective in relation to what has come before, and for some, a plunge into the boundless realms between. For Steve Von Till, that process has always taken on an added dimension to become the most sacred of tasks. Whether through the apocalyptic uprising of Neurosis, the sonic deconstructions of their sister project, Tribes of Neurot, the invocatory intimacy of his eponymous solo albums or his instrumental psychedelic reveries in the guise of Harvestman, that dialogue has never just been with musical influences, but with what underpins them: the primordial, elemental forces now banished to the peripheries of our contemporary consciousness, yet still broadcasting a signal for all who will listen.

Released periodically on three of 2024's full moons -- April 23rd's Pink Moon, July 21st's Buck Moon and October 17th's Hunter Moon -- the three-album cycle, "Triptych", is Harvestman's most ambitious undertaking yet. But it's also the distillation of a unique approach that finds a continuity amongst the fragmented, treating all its myriad musical sources and reference points not as building bricks, but as tuning forks for a collective ancestral resonance, residing in that liminal space between the fundamental and the imaginary, the intrinsic and the speculative.

Drawn to the megaliths, ruins and ancient sites mapped out along the British and European mainland's geographical and psychic landscapes, the folklore and apocrypha forever resurfacing as portals from a rational world, "Triptych" is a meditation forged from traces and residues, and an hallucinatory recollection of artists who have tapped into that enduring otherworldliness embedded within us all. It's a dream diary narrating a passage through Summer Isle where Flying Saucer Attack are wafting out of a window, a distant Fairport Convention are being remixed by dub master Adrian Sherwood, celestial scanners Tangerine Dream are trying to drown out Bert Jansch and Hawkwind are playing Steeleye Span covers, all prised out of time yet bound to its singularity.
Woven together from home studio recordings that span two decades, this latest outing as Harvestman finds parallels with nature's cycles not just in its release dates but in the repeated structure that binds each album, like an imprint refracted through three separate strata. As with April's "Part One" and the forthcoming "Part Three", "Part Two", starts on a collaboration with Om bassist and long-term friend of Steve's, Al Cisneros, with a dub take opening the B-Side. Here, the opening track, "The Hag Of Beara Vs The Poet"'s languid, tribal groove expands into a chromatic wash, like an endless drip of oil spreading out under a midsummer haze.

A filtering of the alpha-state travelogues of its predecessor, "Part Two" reaches even deeper into primal yet pristine states. It journeys from the undulating drone and slow-thawing wonder of "The Falconer", as if the Myst soundtrack were being broadcast from outer space, through "Damascus"'s perpetual-motion, dreamtime bazaar and "Vapour Phase"s seismograph frequencies measuring supernatural tremors to "The Unjust Incarceration"s distorted bagpipes, sounding a noise-frayed lament.

If "Triptych" is a multi- and extra-sensory experience, it extends to the remarkable glyph-style artwork of Henry Hablak, a map of correspondences from a long-forgotten ancient and advanced civilization. As with "Triptych" itself, it's an echo from another time, an act of binding, a guide to be endlessly reinterpreted, and a signpost to the sacred that might not indicate where to look, but how.

When State Faults reemerged in 2019 after a five year hiatus (years they spent playing with their indie-punk side project Slow Bloom), they burst back onto the scene with their third full-length LP "Clairvoyant" in hand. The album's subsequent success saw the band touring extensively across North America and Europe in the latter half of the year. With a renewed sense of maturity and focus, each member was eager to seize the momentum in 2020. Then the world shut down.

Forced to cancel their spring and summer tours, State Faults embraced the post-pandemic landscape by immersing themselves in fresh material. After a year of intensive writing, they teamed up with producer Chris Teti (The World Is A Beautiful Place…) in Burlington, Connecticut to craft their fourth studio album, "Children of the Moon." With the world still largely shut down, the band would spend the next several years biding their time, navigating numerous post production delays, financial hardships, personal misfortune and a near break-up before finally finding the right opportunity to present the album to the world. Pushing the boundaries of the screamo genre, COTM sees the band exhibiting their creative evolution with each track on the album.

Lush string arrangements of the opener, "Blood Moon," seamlessly delivers a blend heavy riffs and melodic precision. "Palo Santo" continues with infectious hooks and a rare showcase of Jonny Andrew's singing amidst his signature screams, while "Heat Death" and "Divination" showcase the band at their heaviest. Midway through, the band ventures into uncharted territory with the ambitious 10-minute prog/screamo odyssey, "No Gospel." The song features psychedelic guitar work, danceable drum and bass rhythms, and a downtempo second half immersed in spaced-out drones and reverb-soaked vocals. The album concludes with the post-rock closer, "Bodega Head," an intricately arranged ballad that builds from gentle acoustic guitar to a crescendo of haunting strings, galloping drums, and a soaring electric guitar solo. State Faults sounds as massive as ever here and "Children of the Moon" stands as a testament to band brimming with creative energy.

Blind Girls "An Exit Exists"

LP - $17.25 / CASSETTE - $7.50
LP UPC: 641956287123
STREET DATE: 7/26/24
CAT#: VIS014 / SV29
LABEL: Persistent Vision / Secret Voice

In the decade that Blind Girls have spent making blistering and technical screamo, their efforts have resulted in 2 albums, 3 EP's, a split, and a single. The 2022 album from the Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia quintet, The Weight of Everything, is a crushing exploration of seamless discord. Blind Girls' tempestuous performances have earned them a dedicated following in their home country, further expanded by tours in Japan, Canada and the United States. While performing the unrelenting material of The Weight of Everything over two years around the world, Blind Girls quietly administered higher doses of melody in new work, giving more time and care to doleful passages of solitary guitar strumming that appeared in past songs. These songs, set to be jointly released through Persistent Vision and Secret Voice, make up Blind Girls new album, An Exit Exists.

Blind Girls have a distinct way of making entire works sound like a single composition, both live and on record, championing the punk tradition of playing with as few breaks as possible, if any. Ben Smith's extraordinarily intense drumming is akin to bands like Ampere and Converge, the frantic riffage of guitarists Julian Currie, Luke Sweeney, and bassist Mark Grant is simultaneously representative of current hardcore and reminiscent of metalcore of days past, and the throat-lacerating screams of vocalist Sharni Brouwer are in a class shared perhaps only with Jerome's Dream. This is no small feat. Still yet, the tracks on An Exit Exists are more powerful than ever before, as Blind Girls employ the same engineering team of Brock Weston for recording and Rollie Ulug for mixing and mastering as they did for The Weight of Everything. The band was intent on harnessing the familiarity built with the two for An Exit Exists, and as listeners are pulled through the record, it's clear that they have once again overseen Blind Girls achieving new heights of sonic extremity, now stitched together by passages of deeply emotional musicality.

The emotion in the heavily incorporated melodies, not to mention the face-ripping breakdowns and thrashing blast beats, of An Exit Exists are the complement to its conceptual theme addressing abuse. Brouwer explains, "An Exit Exists was written during and retrospectively on two separate instances dealing with abuse from those I loved. Each song is a reflection on the emotions and process I went through from realization, feeling trapped, guilt, defeat, acceptance and eventually finding a safe way out."

demmers "Fears and Shadows"

CASSETTE - $6.50
STREET DATE: 7/19/24
CAT#: PRO-099
LABEL: Protagonist Music

The streets of northern New Jersey are paved with the dreams of people looking for an escape. Even driving to the beach means navigating a highway that cuts directly through a cemetery. Embracing this somewhat infamous Jersey gloom, Jerad Mione started writing the songs that would become demmers in the fall of 2023. Having an array of influences ranging from the early records of The Cure and The Chameleons to more modern fare like Bloc Party and Chain Cult, Jerad enlisted Tommy McGreevy and Matt Olsson to help perfect and record an EP worth of songs into existence. With years of hardcore songwriting and punk ethics (members share time in Kirby Kiss, Lesser Minds, Spell It Out, and more) under their belts, the trio behind demmers bring you six songs that detail the futility of dreams and the false promise of escape, all while diverging from their past musical leanings to bring listeners a fresh take on new wave and post punk.

Her Head's On Fire "Strange Desires"

LP - $17.25
LP UPC: 724399772507
STREET DATE: 7/19/2024
CAT#: IOD-62
LABEL: Iodine Recordings

"Strangeness is a necessary ingredient in beauty." - French Poet, Charles Baudelaire.

Her Head's On Fire is a fierce quartet with an impressive pedigree (Garrison, Small Brown Bike, The Bomb, and Saves the Day) serving up heart-seeking post-hardcore and emotive rock with enlivening riffs and melodies. The indie rock supergroup offers their strangeness to beauty with Strange Desires, their sophomore effort and follow-up to their debut, College Rock & Clove Cigarettes.

Strange Desires deepens and expands on their first release. It has moments reminiscent of late 80s New Wave, early 90s indie, and post-hardcore peppered with poetic oddities that make the band's music memorable.

From the gauntlet-throw of an opener "Cuts" through the swaggering sneer of "Aren't I the Champion" to closer "The Rain," this record is full of intentional sidewinders--smart, literate songs about the most primal feelings and experiences we share as humans.

In some ways, this increased heft is emotional. The aforementioned track, "The Rain," is rooted in both the tragic 2021 passing of guitarist Jeff Dean's friend and Planes Mistaken for Stars vocalist/guitarist Gared O'Donnell as well as the death of vocalist Sid Jagger's father.

In other ways, it is sonic. Legendary producer John Agnello (Jawbox, Son Volt, Kurt Vile, Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jr) mixed the record, Jeff Dean recorded it, and Jason Narducy (Superchunk, Bob Mould, Sunny Day Real Estate, Foo Fighters) co-produced it along with the band. The result is a captivating indie rock wall of sound from start to finish.

TRACK LISTING:
01. Cuts
02. You're Nothing
03. Aren't I The Champion
04. Addicts and Habits
05. Better Men Than Me

Eye For An Eye "Omega Drone / Who"

LP - $17.25
STREET DATE: 7/19/24
CAT#: DW259
LABEL: Deathwish Inc.

Boston has been at the center of Traditional Punk/Hardcore since the genre's inception in the early 1980s. Often times the modern narrative stays with the primordial (FU's, Slapshot, SSD, Gang Green, etc.) However in the late 1980s an equally influential Melodic Hardcore scene emerged with new musical sounds and introspective ideas. The band at the heart of this generational shift was Eye For An Eye.

Eye For An Eye formed in 1988. After dozens of legendary live shows they landed on the lineup of: Jason Grotrian, Kevin Norton, Lloyd Stanley, and Thos Niles. Soon after they released the 5 song "Omega Drone" EP on Blackout! Records (Killing Time, Outburst) in 1991. Recorded at Syncro Sound in Boston (The Cars, Bad Brains, etc), "Omega Drone" introduced Eye For An Eye to the underground on a larger level. Supporting the release, the band played alongside contemporaries BURN, Quicksand, SOIA, and Shelter all throughout the United States.

In 1992, Eye For An Eye once again entered Syncro Sound, recording the 4 song "Who" EP for the Tribe Records label. This release also marks the addition of musician/engineer Dean Baltulonis (Supertouch, Wrecking Crew, etc.) who joined the band on second guitar. "Who" is considered one of the greatest and under appreciated EPs of the time. Showing Eye For An Eye leaning more into their melodious and philosophical ideas more than ever before.

Eye For An Eye disbanded later that year. Members went their separate ways with some playing in Shelter, 454 Big Block, Straight Faced, The Eulogy, La Gritona, Anodyne, 27, Windmills By The Ocean, and more. Others went onto be active behind-the-scenes with Grotrian excelling in graphic design work (Judge, etc.) and Baltulonis establishing himself as a respected audio engineer with his studio The Wild Arctic.

"Omega Drone / Who" is both EPs from Eye For An Eye fully remixed and remastered by Alex Garcia-Rivera (Kingpin, American Nightmare, etc.) at Mystic Valley Studio. Presented as one LP collection, these nine songs encapsulate the moment when hardcore generationally began to evolve, influencing present and future creators alike. Changing the course of the Boston underground in soul and mind forever.

ALARM! "ALARM!"

ALARM! "ALARM!"

LP - $15.30
STREET DATE: 7/12/24
CAT#: AL-54
LABEL: Armageddon

ALARM! are a hardcore punk band from Stockholm, Sweden. After twenty-plus years of playing together in Victims, Andy, Jon and Gareth reunited in early 2023 with the ambition of making some new noise. Jon switched from guitar to bass and the trio wrote a bunch of songs. About a year later they were joined by Jon’s childhood friend, Henrik. This would be the first time the two had played together since their legendary hardcore band Outlast folded in the late 90’s.

Henrik’s vocals and Jon’s bass playing are the key ingredients in taking ALARM!’s sound away from these Swede’s well-known crust punk roots. The bass is both manic and melodic at the same time, pummeling the riffs behind the wall of guitar and drums. Henrik’s piercing vocals, raw yet steeped in emotion, scream of personal anguish and pissed off, political rage. ALARM! have endeavoured to evoke the classic Swedish sound whilst harking back to an ever-so-slight hint of melodic hardcore pre Y2K.

ALARM! have a 9 song twelve inch record already recorded and soon to be released by Armageddon Label, as well as an upcoming appearance on the second instalment of Malmö-based Quarantined Records “Greetings From Sweden” compilation (distributed it the USA by Armageddon Label). As a follow up to the debut album, a 7 inch is already in the pipeline. A slew of shows in Sweden throughout 2023 have seen ALARM! share stages with the likes of Chain Whip, Nukies and Sharp Tongues. Early 2024 marked their first trip abroad, to Spain, with Barcelona’s Enchastre. More shows are planned for 2024, both in Sweden and further afield.

"AALARM! comes from Stockholm. Even though this is Stockholmers ALARM!'s first release, the band consists of a bunch of extremely experienced guys who have a lot of history playing in hardcore bands. They describe themselves as the following "75% Victims, 50% Outlast, 125% Hardcore!". That sums it all up very well I think. When I say that Alarm! plays hardcore on a higher level, you won't be immediately surprised. The gas pedal is already pushed to the floor from the first moment you press play."

"It doesn't take long before ALARM! has me in its grip and they leave no prisoners. When the fourth track "Scare Game" comes on, I'm already on the floor knocked out. It's a real highlight and my favorite on the record. Only on track six, "Ancient Cycles" does the speed slow down and we're allowed to gasp for breath. What makes me happy about hardcore, punk and its related styles, is that when you listen to the music and read the lyrics, you get a little hope for humanity because there are actually more people out there who think there is a lot of madness in the world. Listening to ALARM! also gives me that feeling" - Anders Bergström/Heavyunderground.se

Insania, the 2016 debut album from Tijuana, Mexico’s Habak reissued on vinyl for the first time ever. Habak exploded into the DIY scene in the last few years with their emotionally charged blend of blackened crust, screamo, and post-metal. Sung in Spanish, vocalist Alex’s lyrics touch on themes of mental anguish, isolation, and hopelessness.

This new reissue was remastered by Jack Shirley at the Atomic Garden (Deafheaven, Frail Body) and includes a bonus live version of “Orbes de Almas” recorded in 2023 by Steve Roche (Saetia).

“Insania” comes packaged in a full color jacket with lyric sheet and colored vinyl.

LP UPC: 724399772521
CASSETTE UPC: 724399772538
STREET DATE: 6/28/24
CAT#: IOD-63
LABEL: Iodine Recordings

New England has always served as a breeding ground for some of the most passionate and heartfelt voices in hardcore. Featuring members of Verse and Defeater, Love Letter are the latest powerhouse to join this esteemed lineage.

Everyone Wants Something Beautiful is an open window into insecurity and self-awareness. It is a deep-dive into generational trauma, its different forms, and the ways it can be projected onto others. We share a commitment to crafting music that is honest and powerful--that reflects our friendships, views, and shared musical journey over two decades. We believe every note and word must carry meaning and purpose. The musical vision for this record was to create a compelling backdrop for captivating and emotional storytelling. It's honest, mature, and carries deep personal meaning for each member.

Guitarist Jay Maas (Defeater) has also produced countless records for other bands at Getaway Recordings in Massachusetts, including Bane, Counterparts, Title Fight and more. After being behind the scenes on so many quintessential records, Maas is back at the helm. "Having produced records for two decades now I've had the chance to work with thousands of artists, I'm grateful that this was my opportunity to pull together some of my favorite people who also happen to be extremely talented musicians."

Maas tapped fellow founding member of Defeater, Andrew Reitz, to play drums along with guitarist Matthew Spence and fellow engineer and bassist Dave Alcan. The result is high-octane instrumentation paired with the poignant yet biting lyrics and vocals of Quinn Murphy (VERSE).

The debut LP's first single "Misanthropic Holiday or Vacation" sounds like both warning and indictment, exploring ways we are expected to deal with the human condition in modern society. It seems to blur the lines of perseverance and begrudged surrender, crescendoing into a cathartic release that makes one feel both possessed and furious. It's hard to stay sitting by the end of it.

There's a notable freedom in the band's songwriting, and their desire to push the limits of where heartfelt, emotive and heavy music can go is apparent with every note and word. Matched by a charged live show, Love Letter is sure to turn heads of fans of hardcore, post-hardcore, screamo and beyond. Everyone Wants Something Beautiful is available for pre-order now.

HUSHMONEY "HUSHMONEY"

LP - $17.25 / CD - $7.00
STREET DATE: 6/28/24
CAT#: SDR-118
LABEL: Sunday Drive

Across their debut full-length album, HUSHMONEY paints the ridiculousness of existence so very right. Mixed and mastered by Grammy-nominated producer Will Yip (Code Orange, Turnstile, Mannequin Pussy, Title Fight, etc.) HUSHMONEY is a deft concept album about the faulty choices that bitter men nearing middle age can make, backed with the chances they have to redeem themselves if they know where to look. We're all trying to figure out how to survive and make meaning--and to have a little fun in the process, too. If the band itself has been an escape hatch from mid-30s anxieties and disappointments for its members, its work here shows how much fun you can have and how good you can do when you start to turn that stuff on its head, to turn it all into a shout-out-loud rock song.

The debut full-length follows HUSHMONEY's EP Success Pool, which introduced their hardcore, 90s rock, and alt-country-influenced sonics paired with cheeky and lyric-driven storytelling. The five-piece band pairs Chris Gaylor of All-American Rejects and Phil Matarese, the creator and voice of HBO's wonderfully playful Animals, with three longtime friends. Matarese, guitarist Michael Iannatto, and bassist Brian Barbaruolo began playing together in assorted outfits as young teenagers in rural New Jersey, forced to find social cachet outside of sports since their hometown football team won almost zero games during their entire adolescence. After they all found themselves in Los Angeles in their mid-thirties, they started another band, recruiting Gaylor and guitarist Matt Martin.

HUSHMONEY became a way to blow off steam and hang out with old pals in a low-rent practice space downtown. They could vent about worst-case scenarios, play, and sing until it all felt a little more tolerable. The rock 'n' roll sound of the band pairs with an unabashed and unironic embrace of the alternative rock that these five dudes now somewhere in their 30s totally loved as circa-millennia teens.

Outlander "Acts of Harm"

LP - $19.40 / CD - $9.60
STREET DATE: 6/28/24
CAT#: CRR223
LABEL: Church Road

Outlander have been haunting stages around the UK and beyond for the best part of a decade, bringing their gloomy, caustic brand of shoegaze to support tours with genre heavyweights Bossk and Grivo and festivals like Dunk! and Arctangent.

Acts of Harm follows their 2021 EP 'Sundowning/Unconditional' and finds the band at their most introspective, sonically exploring the vast grey area between the languid slowcore of duster and codeine, the dream-like shoegaze of swervedriver and catherine wheel and the angular, glacial bombardment of kowloon walled city and true widow.

An intimate coming of age record of reconciliation with adulthood, 'Acts of Harm' finds beauty and despair in the mundane, and explores the cycles of decline that prop-up the fragile balance of normality in modern society. A singular body of work written mostly in isolation, pulled together piece by piece during the pandemic and recorded over two years by Neil Kennedy at The Ranch Production House in Southampton. The songs move at a funereal pace and take a sombre look at human themes, from the empty stare through the living room window of 'want no more', the communication breakdown of 'new motive power', the cathartic breaking point of 'lye waste' and the fraught quiet beyond.

01. Bound

03. i: Nuclear
04. Orbit

Charles Bronson "Youth Attack: Dekalb Straight Ahead"

LP - $17.25
STREET DATE: 6/21/24
CAT#: YA100
LABEL: Youth Attack

Perhaps no hardcore band of the late 90s embodies the spirit of youth and the cynicism of Gen X better than Charles Bronson. Humorous and sarcastic, yet heartfelt and sincere, the band showcased the absurdity of being young and told to feel excited about an inevitable future of debt slavery, career entrapment, divorce, and all the usual misery that comes with being an adult.

After just three years as a band in rural Dekalb, Illinois, and written at a lightning pace while playing shows virtually every weekend, "Youth Attack!" showcases Charles Bronson with a fully developed and innovative style, delivering 20 relentless songs at a breakneck pace in just over 12 minutes. With lyrics that address everything from corporate chains swallowing up small towns to the allure of escapism, the band sought to push the form of hardcore forward in a way that was more personal and relatable while remaining steeped in the classic influences of the genre--an ethos that carries over to Youth Attack Records today.

Celebrating its 25th anniversary, and for the first time in decades, "Youth Attack!" is now available for a limited time, tastefully remastered by Will Killingsworth at Dead Air Studios, sounding crazier and more poignant than ever. "As adult oblivion beckons, now's the time…"
