ADULT. & Planet B "Glass in the Trash b/w Release Me"

CAT#: 31G132
LABEL: Three One G

Justin Pearson (Dead Cross, Deaf Club, The Locust), Luke Henshaw (Sonido de la Frontera), Kevin Avery (Field Day, Retox) and Scott Osment (Deaf Club, Glassing, Volente Beach) formed Planet B with the shared purpose of creating music subversive in sound and sobering in message. Their music lays somewhere just out of reach of genre, with aesthetics rooted in hip hop, hardcore punk, turntablism, and 70s-80s horror movie scores. It is catchy, heavily percussive, and eerie all at once, much like the creative output of dark dance duo ADULT., a pair that seek to harness “the perverse aspects of the late '70s analog dystopian post-modernism.” These artists’ bodies of work mirror one another in form and function, and both “Release Me” and “Glass in The trash” encapsulates the ethos of both, allowing the duos’ similar mindsets to collide. Nicola Kuperus’s hypnotic vocals add an occult aura, mysteriously alluring and supernatural, pulsating and equally intense alongside Pearson’s aggressive style. Henshaw and Adam Lee Miller’s sampling, sequencing and synthesizing entangle and diverge seamlessly, providing dance-driven soundtracks fit for an apocalypse. Both tracks ebb and flow, pull and push, begs to be released and yet remains throbbing in your head long after it ends.

This record has been recorded by Adam Lee Miller and Luke Henshaw. Mixed and mastered by Brent Asbury at Measurable Harm.

Design and layout by The Black Moon Design.
Album photography by Becky DiGiglio.

New Day Rising "Memoirs of Cynicism"

LP - $14.00
STREET DATE: 12/30/22
CAT#: PRO-073
LABEL: Protagonist Music

New Day Rising helped to start an "emocore" explosion in the mid 90s. They created a unique sound unlike any other band of the time, which spurred many record labels to approach them for releases. Memoirs Of Cynicism, the band's only full length, sees them going beyond their original earlier 90's melodic hardcore roots to embrace a darker direction. Fueled by a growing lyrical pessimism alongside the musical rise of a more metallic delivery, the stand-out album from 1997 is a documentation of the band's growing song-writing power. Mixing a gutteral assault with elements of vocal beauty, New Day Rising showed that they would not be held down by the limitations of genre. This milestone album is finally making it's debut onto vinyl for it's 25th Anniversary!

Members also play(ed) in notable bands such as Spread the Disease, Acrid, The China White, Die In The Light, and Omen Astra. The original recording was only ever released on CD, but has been newly remastered for this 25th anniversary vinyl edition by James Plotkin at Plotkinworks, with all new artwork and layout by band-members Dave Buschemeyer and Oliver Nac.

Groundwork "Today We Will Not Be Invisible nor Silent"

LP - $13.35
STREET DATE: 12/16/22
CAT#: PRO-050
LABEL: Protagonist Music

The Arizona desert has produced its fair share of notable underground music over the years, and one of its early hardcore offerings was the emotional and political charge of Groundwork. Rising from the dust in the first half of the1990's and imploding in only about four years, Groundwork left behind a series of vinyl releases and live performances which still retain an impact on heavy music today. Sharing the stage with bands like Unbroken, Rorschach, Swing Kids, Chokehold, Born Against, Outspoken, Downcast, 4 Walls Falling, Native Nod, and many more, their evolution in sound and approach culminated in their only full-length release in 1994. Today We Will Not Be Invisible Nor Silent is sometimes cited as a defining LP of that era in hardcore, despite the band remaining lesser known than many of its contemporaries. Sharing subtle melodic touches, bone-rattling heaviness, and an undercurrent of groove, the record uses quiet passes and wild crescendos to achieve a battering experience that leaves a lasting impression. It is a testament to everything the band stood for, explored, endured, and ultimately was destroyed by; an intense and emotional journey for a group of friends set to the soundtrack of catastrophe. Members went on to play in bands such as 400 Years and Absinthe.

The recording was lovingly restored from the original reels and remixed by Steve Roche at Permanent Hearing Damage. It was then mastered for vinyl and digital by James Plotkin at Plotkinworks.

Spark "Supernova"

LP - $14.00
STREET DATE: 12/16/22
CAT#: SDR065
LABEL: Sunday Drive

Consistently looking within, questioning, and finding solutions to become a better person is an overall theme Spark has established in their music. On their first LP, “Supernova”, vocalist, Andy Villhauer dials on these themes from song to song, expressing rage for the way things are and encouraging positivity and growth. There’s truly a “Supernova” of emotions heard throughout the LP, with the backing of decades of influences of hardcore—from the sounds of DC’s revolution summer to the straight edge revival of the late 90s–early 00s. Fabian, Yannick, Chris and Jonah are at their strongest here, creating dynamic, expressive and melodic hardcore.

With the help of producer David Deutsch, Colin Knight and Will Killingsworth wrapping up mixing and mastering respectively, Spark shines on their first LP, creating a concise, emotional, and modern hardcore LP.

Rejection Pact "Can We Wait?"

LP - $13.35
STREET DATE: 12/16/22
CAT#: SIR-034
LABEL: Safe Inside

Rejection Pact’s new album “Can We Wait?” is the 12” follow up and natural progression from their previous 7” release “Threats of the World.” In familiar fashion, the songs leave no room for filler with the 13 track album clocking in under 20 minutes. The new album leans much more into social & political issues with every song fitting a cohesive theme that begs the question “CAN WE WAIT?”

The group pulls in influences ranging from politically charged punk acts like Propagandhi & Bad Religion to more straight forward hardcore acts like Bane & Have Heart, as well as drawing heavily from PNW hardcore legends Go It Alone.

The album was record by Ryan Morgan of Misery Signals at the Tonic Room in Boise, ID throughout the spring-summer-fall of 2021, and it was mixed by Taylor Young at the Pit Recording Studio, and mastered by Nick Townsend of Infrasonic Mastering in Los Angeles, CA.

In a wave where so many hardcore bands are leaning into the heavier/mosh sound, “CAN WE WAIT?” is a politically charged, pissed off journey that doesn’t waste any time sugar coating it’s message, and will have you singing along and stage diving in no time.

Brooke Smith "Sunday Matinee"

BOOK - $25.65
STREET DATE: 12/9/22
CAT#: RADIO-SM
LABEL: Radio Raheem

If the name Brooke Smith is known to the general public, it is from her acting on television shows such as Grey’s Anatomy and Ray Donovan or her role as Catherine Martin in Silence of the Lambs. But prior to all that, Brooke was a participant in the New York Hardcore scene of the 1980s, photographing bands at CBGB’s notorious Sunday afternoon gigs and hanging out on the Lower East Side of Manhattan.

In 2010 when Brooke was moving, a box was unearthed of the photos she’d taken during that heady time in her life. A year later, these pictures were exhibited at the Primary Gallery in New York City under the appropriate title, Sunday Matinee. Soon after the exhibit closed, Smith began combing through the thousands of pictures she had snapped in the hopes of editing them down into a book.

Now, after years of painstaking assembly, the book Sunday Matinee will finally see the light of day through Radio Raheem Records. Made up of live shots of Bad Brains, Agnostic Front, Cro-Mags, Murphy’s Law, and Underdog as well as candid photography of the colorful characters who made up the New York Hardcore scene, Sunday Matinee documents all the thrill and excitement of a Sunday afternoon on the Bowery in the 1980s and gifts it to you from the safety of the present day.

Sunday Matinee contains over 140 images, both color and black & white, spread across 160 pages in a clothbound 11"x11" book.

Orange Island "One Night Stay"

LP - $15.30
LP UPC: 603111749716
STREET DATE: 12/9/22 CAT#: IOD024
LABEL: Iodine Recordings

Hailing from the suburban mill town of Clinton, MA, Orange Island were once a household name during the late 90s and early 00’s post-hardcore scene, coming up alongside bands like Taking Back Sunday and Thursday. Orange Island were often mislabeled as emo, but a more accurate description of their sound would be calling them an abrasive yet matured indie-rock band with an awareness of a pop-filled past. “One Night Stay” combines melodic hardcore, complex guitar interplay with lots of pop-influenced choruses and deeply somber lyrics that focus on the darker sides of life. Featuring tracks that have been out of print for over 15 years, they are now available on vinyl for the first time. Produced by Matt Squire (Taking Back Sunday, Thrice, and The Used).

“While indie-rock bands Hum and Samiam helped paved the way for the genre, Orange Island has taken those ideas and infused them with new energy.” - AltPress

“Sounding like a drop-D tuned Saves the Day or Jawbreaker, this Clinton, MA, quartet fuses gut-quaking East coast post-hardcore rhythms, à la Quicksand, dual guitar interplay and intelligent and earnest lyrics.” - EXCLAIM

Squint "Wash Away"

CASSETTE - $7.00
STREET DATE: 12/2/22
CAT#: SDR088
LABEL: Sunday Drive

Following their debut EP released earlier this spring, Squint is swiftly back with their follow-up, “Wash Away”. The two pair nicely together, where “Feel it” is much more driving and abrasive, “Wash Away” leans more into the poppier sound influenced by ‘90s DIY indie-rock from bands like Superchunk, Archers of Loaf, and Dinosaur Jr.

While “Wash Away” still does a great job of displaying Squint’s angsty, melodic hardcore heard on their debut, this batch of songs sound more upbeat with guitar melodies acting almost as backup vocals for Brennan to shout with. Again, Squint has carved their own path in this modern age of melodic hardcore with a unique rhythm to easily get stuck on repeat.

Chastity "Suffer Summer"

LP UPC: 723314783932
INDIE LP UPC: 723314784069
STREET DATE: 12/2/22
CAT #: DW237
LABEL: Deathwish Inc.

Brandon Williams makes resonant songs that capture isolation and resilience. As the songwriter behind Chastity, the Whitby, Ontario musician has made three unrelentingly perceptive albums culminating in the cathartic Suffer Summer, which is out January 13, 2022 via Deathwish and Dine Alone Records. The LP caps off an album trilogy that showcases both Williams’ emotional range as a lyricist but also his boundless love of outsider music. His 2018 debut Death Lust pulled from Unwound and The Smashing Pumpkins as he grappled with mortality while 2019’s Home Made Satan dealt in world-weary anxiety and Hum-like atmospherics. But Suffer Summer is a meditation on happiness, channeled through powerhouse riffs and undeniably potent choruses, sung with Mineral and Jimmy Eat World worn on his sleeve. It’s an album that shows how healing and staying content is hard but necessary work.

Williams mostly wrote Suffer Summer throughout 2019 while he and his band joined acts like Fucked Up, DIIV, and Alexisonfire on tour. It was a fruitful and exciting period for Williams, who whittled down 24 new tracks to 10, taking several new creative leaps while penning these songs. Take “Happy Face,” the first song Williams wrote for Suffer Summer and his most autobiographical offering to date. Written as a tribute to his longtime friend who died of an overdose, Williams sings, “You and I were alive at the same time / I’m lucky for it / You showed me the Misfits and we sang Out 'Last Caress’ / I’m lucky for it.” It’s raw and gutwrenching in a way that Williams has never allowed himself to be but writing about grief proved to be cathartic for him. “Until now I’ve always tried to keep a safe arm's length away from the real-life content of my songs but on that song, I couldn't,” said Williams. “It was just a needed tribute to him.”

For any artist, taking risks, trusting your intuition, and relinquishing control is a delicate balance but for these songs, Williams knew he needed to step out of his comfort zone by making his writing more collaborative. He enlisted one of Chastity’s earliest and most vocal supporters PUP frontman Stefan Babcock to co-write opener single “Real World” and LP highlight “When You Go Home I Withdrawal.” Both songs find Williams stretching his voice for surging choruses that are anthemic and immediate. “It was so great to work with Stefan: just his attention to detail, song structure, and everything,” said Williams. “He’s a legend and has pumped my tires so much in an actual practical way that has given me courage throughout Chastity.”

Babcock isn’t the only surprise collaborator on this LP. Alexisonfire and City and Colour’s Dallas Green appears as a guest vocalist on “Vicious Circle,” the emotional centerpiece of Suffer Summer. The song, which Williams co-wrote with his partner Ellis’ Linnea Siggelkow, boasts some of his best writing (“Borrowing an old feeling to cover the pain / Can’t keep memories of only the good things,”) and when Green joins to sing the second verse, it makes for the most transcendent moment on the LP. “After we put strings on this song it was just too damn beautiful for my voice,” said Williams. “Dallas’ voice reached right into that beauty. Recording this was the single most surreal and sentimental moment of the project for me I think, with how formative Alexis was for me.” Green also collaborated on the shimmering single “Somersault” in an unexpected way. “He sent me a voice memo called ‘Pumpkins?’ and offered it as a Chastity riff,” said Williams. “It was sludgy but we sped that up into this up-tempo, brighter verse riff that'd become this song: it went from ‘Bullet With Butterfly Wings’ to ‘Today.’”

Suffer Summer was recorded throughout 2020 in fits and starts, with Williams returning to the studio to hone the LP. One song that came together during this time was the single “Pummeling,” another exercise in Williams expanding his creative palate. “‘Pummeling’ was a place I was afraid to go,” said Williams. “I’ve been so focused on my music being challenging, technical, and correct. But on this, I wanted to allow myself to go simple, out of my comfort zone.” The result is undeniably accessible but look below the surface of the welcoming hooks and you’ll find some impossibly dark lyrics. “Same thing every day / I run from feeling fucked til it’s jumping me,” sings Williams. This juxtaposition is where Chastity thrives.

Chastity started as a way for Williams to find community in his suffocating and isolating suburban life, his songs serving as an outstretched hand for the like-minded people on the fringes. The long-lead single “Dying to Live,” encapsulates this ethos when Williams sings, “Another sick person just trying to get well / You, me, everyone I know.” Like all of his music, this song comes from his hometown, in these places graffitied with memories for him: pain, loss, grief, but ultimately acceptance. “We've all been sick this last year and a half: Everyone I know is feeling fucked,” said Williams. “We survive through each other, through being close with each other and finding community and a sense of purpose in our friendships.” Suffer Summer is both a validation and comfort that while the world might be irrevocably fucked, you’re not alone.

LP - $24.40
STREET DATE: 12/2/22
CAT#: EH087
LABEL: End Hits

The word "Maintain" is defined as ‘a condition or state of affairs; to provide with the necessities for life or existence.’ To have the ability to maintain is to be able to hold fast to the unpredictable balance that is life, and to find a way to prosper through the most fluctuating of circumstances. LA Hardcore natives DOWNSET are no stranger to this concept, going on to use life’s checks and balances as the inspiration for their first new album in almost 8 years: Maintain. Recently signed to world renowned heavy metal label Nuclear Blast Records, and having recently released reissued throwbacks of their original demos, DOWNSET have reawakened the passion of old-school hardcore within themselves, and have tapped back into the energy that fueled them from the beginning: life, death, love, hate, injustice… and the streets. Recorded and produced by Rogelio “Roy” Lozano himself with help of Nick Jett from Terror during the writing process and pre-production and finally mastered by Howie Weinberg the new album Maintain will finally be available on vinyl in several limited colors on December 2, 2022 on End Hits Records.

Monumental progress doesn’t occur overnight. Some of man kind’s most powerful words don’t come from education or privilege, but erupt from the pain and roughness of the streets; they smolder through the cracks in the concrete until eventually grand truths are revealed, and the winds of change slowly emerge. It is with these notions in mind that old school Hardcore Kings DOWNSET began to surface in Los Angeles, California in the early 1980’s. A musical style that was distinctly Hardcore combined with Oropeza’s MC abilities allowed DOWNSET to stand out from other metal acts, while still being able to achieve a variety of tours with some of the most prominent bands of the time. After recently re-releasing the third album "Check Your People" on vinyl on End Hits Records, DOWNSET’s fourth album "Universal" originally from 2004 follows, which will be available on limited color vinyl for the first time ever on End Hits Records.

Sloth Fist “Mothman Is Real”

LP - $14.00 / CD - $8.00
LP UPC: 759992729153
CD UPC: 759992729146
STREET DATE: 12/2/22
CAT#: MPR007
LABEL: QP Distro

Hailing from Dallas, TX, Sloth Fist are a 5 piece punk / rock ‘n’ roll band that combine the melodic sense of The Descendents and Teenage Bottlerocket with the fierceness of bands like Motorhead and Turbonegro. The result is an eclectic mix of songs that will satisfy anyone who likes their music hard and heavy, but still catchy with hooks galore.

The brainchild of songwriter / vocalist Eric Daniels (Bullet Machine, Black Habits, Responsible Johnny), the band also features Rafael Genovez (Responsible Johnny) on drums, Marc Maxey (Justice League, The Killing Flame) on bass, Matt Thomas (Slave One, Neighborhood Villain, Bullet Machine) on guitar, and Cody Shavers (Blanche Davidians, Perdition) on guitar.

Sloth Fist formed in 2018 and quickly began playing shows around the DFW metroplex, including a show at the legendary Three Links in Deep Ellum with Japan’s Mugen Hoso. Daniels, Genovez, and Maxey recorded and released their debut EP, “Live Slow, Die Whenever” in late 2018 as a 3 piece.

Soon after the EP release, Matt Thomas was recruited on guitar and the band played a handful of shows as a 4 piece, including a show with Boston’s Moving Targets with both Daniels and Thomas on guitar. With Daniels’ desire to focus on vocals, the band recruited guitarist Alex Casanova to round out the lineup. More shows followed with the likes of heavy metal legends Thor, and Dag Nasty spinoff Field Day. These 5 hit the studio in late 2019 to record the “Mothman is Real” LP. Twelve blistering tracks were mixed by Andrew Berlin at The Blasting Room in CO and mastered by Joel Grind (Toxic Holocaust).

Four videos were released from the LP including one for “Sloth Fist Will Be Annihilated”, filmed in quarantine times, with each member shooting their own footage at their homes and / or practice space. For the end, however, dozens of fans and friends submitted their own videos of themselves singing along to the song’s end chant “Live Slow, Die Whenever – SLOTH FIST”. Some notable faces include Jeff Caudill (Gameface) and Peter Cortner (Dag Nasty / Field Day).

Doodseskader "Year One"

LP - $17.25
LP UPC: 305390598220
STREET DATE: 11/18/22
CAT#: ISO037
LABEL: Isolation Rec.

The death squad marches on: Two years after entering the battlefield with their debut “MMXX: Year Zero”, Belgium’s Doodseskader are gearing up for their next fight with the release of their new album “Year One”.

What are they confronting? Their surroundings. Their own devils. Sometimes life itself. But while “Year Zero” showed singer/bassist Tim De Gieter (Amenra, Every Stranger Looks Like You,…) and singer/drummer Sigfried Burroughs (Kapitan Korsakov, The K., …) struggling amid the turmoil, “Year One” is a victorious testament of tackling life’s obstacles head first. “As ‘Year Zero’ mainly talked about our past and has a rather sad tone to it, ‘Year One’ is the voice of the people we are at this very moment”, the duo comments. “We’ve stood up, found solutions and tried to head toward a new way of living. It’s about growing up, fighting your demons and giving them a place to rest. Now that all of that is said, we can move on.”

Though still a relatively young band, “Year One” opens a new artistic chapter for Doodseskader – surely just one of many to come. As the 2022 standalone singles “GABOS / Nonstop” and “Still Haven’t Killed Myself” have already proven, these guys are not ones for standing still. They are a hip-hop act in one moment and a grunge band in the following, just to transform into a full-blown sludge or hardcore steamroller next. Sometimes they are all and sometimes none of the above – there’s no way to pin them down. “Being able to draw from different musical genres makes us who we are”, the duo states. “There's no specific genre we’re looking at. Great songs are great songs. It’s craftsmanship.”

Further expanding their unique sonic palette, Doodseskader did not only look back to the great bands of the past for inspiration but also made a conscious effort to discover fresh artists from all corners of the musical realm, sharing an open mindset with genre-defying and -defining trailblazers like Show Me The Body, Ghostemane and Ho99o9. While they kept their trademark reverb-drenched bass sound, they incorporated more production details, many of them found in techno – adding even more depth and dynamic to their crushing mix.

Written in late 2020 and once again recorded by Tim De Gieter in Much Luv Studio (Amenra, Brutus, Absent In Body), “Year One” is as much a declaration of war as it is a declaration of independence: Doodseskader are here to cut their own path – and you better not stand in their way.

  1. 1745
  2. Bloemen Noch Kransen
  3. It’s Not An Addiction If You Don’t Feel Like Quitting
  4. Less Of Everything
  5. Alive & Not Well

  7. Blood Feud

  • Produced by Tim De Gieter (Absent In Body, Brutus, Amenra)
  • Mastered by Jack Shirley at Atomic Garden Studios (Oathbreaker, Deafheaven)

Fuck Money "Fuck Money"

CASSETTE - $8.00
CASSETTE UPC: 197187366125
STREET DATE: 11/18/22
CAT#:31G134
LABEL: Three One G

Fuck Money is an American space punk band based in Austin, TX. The group debuted in October 2021 consisting of members TaSzlin Trébuchet (vocals) Alton Jenkins (drums), Bill Kenny (lead guitar), and Jeremy Humphries (bass guitar). Their sound draws on punk rock, noise, industrial, extreme music and other transgressive subgenres. Fuck Money was formed in 2020 during the latter half of the COVID pandemic that year. After writing their first EP, they spent their time recording at Arroyo Audio. The band has created a reputation of performing high energy, sporadic DIY shows in liminal spaces throughout the dark corners of the city-- The Austin Chronicle noted how “the band’s churning feedback swirl is equal parts imposing and obfuscating – curiously serene in its refusal to give its sonic-aggression a clear human face.” Their vocalist is also known for donning an unpredictable and tantalizing look at each show.

Fuck Money’s debut self-titled EP on Three One G is six songs of unrelenting ‘space punk,’ drawing influence from punk, noise, industrial, and extreme music elements. Described as sounding like “a fully rabid Deerhoof,” the merciless & melodic stick-work of Alton Jenkins, paired with the visceral intensity of frontman TaSz Trébuchet, guides listeners down a path of challenging, awe-inspiring sonic behavior adorned with biting yet hyper-melodic guitar melodies. Death From Above’s Jesse F. Keeler aptly explains the EP simply as, “Feeling at all costs. If I was trying to explain this to someone with no reference, I’d say it was like a pomegranate. Challenging to get at the fruit, but worth the effort.”

TRACK LISTING:

  1. Heartthrob
  2. Chirp
  3. Apollo
  4. Demure
  5. Fuck me up
  6. Trolls
